Assuming this was directed at me, the 1%er comment was not about police officers. Sorry

I have been wasting time on the internet lately. I have followed a poster called Runkle of the Bailey. He has a good post on Roger Kotanko. He has called the case strange and unusual. I don't know how to post it here.
Edit: I have followed him because he is a lawyer from Edmonton and does tend to discuss firearm issues.

Toronto police went through a renowned gunsmith's workshop in Simcoe, Ont., after two pistols registered under his name were found with their serial numbers removed at two separate crime scenes, according to search warrant documents obtained by CBC News.
The 33-page Information to Obtain (ITO) document was used to get the search warrant approved by a judge or justice of the peace, and offers more details about the evidence police had before the search of Rodger Kotanko's workshop.
Kotanko's family deny the allegations in the ITO.
They also recently filed a $23-million civil lawsuit against five "John Doe" officers, Insp. Norman Proctor, police Chief James Ramer and the Toronto Police Services Board, alleging the "unlawful" raid caused the gunsmith's "wrongful death" on Nov. 3.
Those claims haven't been proven in court. Simcoe Superior Court said Tuesday that no statement of defence has been filed.

From the article:
“This file is with the director for review,” unit spokesperson Kristy Dennette confirmed in an email. “Once the director makes his decision on whether criminal charges will be laid, I will put out a news release.”

My understanding of the process is, if they recommend charges then there will be a statement to that effect and nothing more; the evidence gathered will be turned over to whomever is doing the criminal investigation. If charges aren't recommended then they release the full report.

Gunsmith shooting
An important thing to remember is that two handguns with serial numbers removed were recovered at different locations. Ask yourself why anyone would remove the serial numbers. If I have a stolen gun, I don't care if it has a serial number or not, I still have it illegally. If I buy a gun illegally, I don't care about the serial number for the same reason. The only person who has a reason to remove the serial number is the person who does not want that firearm traced back to them. I am not trying to justify the shooting, just pointing out why this gunsmith drew attention to himself.

wow talk about trying to connect the dots that are not there
NO PROOF THE GUNSMITH TRIED TO ERASE THE SERIAL NUMBER, NONE
no gunsmith would do that with handguns he imported and made whole in order to re-sell
good thing you will never be a judge of anything

Not to mention that a gunsmith has both the equipment and the knowledge to remove a serial number, so that nobody would be able to recover that serial number, when he is done.

Who would remove the serial number from a gun registered in your own name? Eventually you would you would need to explain where the gun went, I lost it, it was there last time I looked, I suppose you could report it stolen.
A gunsmith risking losing his reputation, business and freedom for a few bucks doesn't make sense.

Exactly, and if he was going to take the risk he would make certain that the police couldn't recover the serial numbers.

also all competent gunsmiths know that merely filing off a serial number does nothing with the advancements of chemical etching to be]ring it back well enough to read
Thanks my friend

He brought the guns in incomplete and without any serial numbers at all. He then finished the guns and added his own personal serial number system assigned to him by the RCMP. If you are going to sell guns illegally and have the option to import them without any markings why add a serial number to begin with? Or baring that, why put a serial number on them that links directly back to you and your company? Just start copying other Norinco serial numbers or something. It just doesn't make sense.
I have no idea what happened and, unfortunately, I don't think I will, or anyone else, ever will. But a whole lot doesn't add up.
