Free Camping By Edmonton
Im hoping to find a spot to camp for the august long weekend that is fairly easy to get to, i was supposed to go down to nordegg but with the wildfire we figured we should stay close to home! hopefully within 1 hour of edmonton. Has anyone camped along the north saskatchewan out by devon area? ive heard its possible i just want some feedback before i just go do it hahaha

Unless you know someone with land that will allow you to camp there is really no “legal” free camping in Alberta as far as I understand it .

The Public Lands Camping Pass is required to random camp on public land along the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains from Grande Prairie to Waterton Lakes National Park.

realistically, the only free camping is Wal-mart.
Not kidding at all.

Starting June 1, 2021, a Public Lands Camping Pass is required. You need to purchase the pass before you embark on your trip, and it costs $20 per person for 3 days, or $30 per person for an annual pass. You can purchase your pass online here.

The Alberta government site states only required on the eastern slopes btw so does the link you posted. Anything west of Grand prairie all the way down to Waterton park anything east of that line I think is still free

Some times the distance you have to travel to use your camping pass on crown land is not worth it ,once you add up your the extra fuel you need to travel there plus $30 a person just for a weekend . But ! It is worth it if you camp for week or more .

Jimbob is correct.
You do NOT need a pass to camp OUTSIDE of the mapped zone.
Pass is only required west of Hwys 22 and 43.

Does anyone know what the fine is if you are caught without that permit?

Found this by doing a search:
Specified penalties may range from $115 to $575, depending on the offence. Ticketed fines include the victim fine surcharge and will be 20% higher than fines listed in the legislation

Thanks, I couldn't locate any information on the amount of the fine and was curious. Not a fan of this dubious fee, and haven't been participating. Figure I'll probably be in for it at some point.

Well to be honest I did a quick search on the ol Google machine and came up with the website link I listed.
I guess it pays to do your own research instead of asking others to do it for you.

You don't even have to leave Edmonton to camp. Lots of spots for tents left along the LRT tracks. The squatters might let you camp by them in the river valley too.
