Default Fly or no fly?

So I got myself a new canvas outfitter tent 10x12. In the past I have never used a fly on a tent. I've been reading how it helps shed moisture and prevent burn holes. What is everyone's thoughts on this? Do you use a fly, why or why not? Thanks.

Of course you tarp the roof of your tent unless you like being wet!

Previously though I've camped when it has rained and snowed and never had any issue with water coming through. Even camping when it was -35 snow melted and froze on the eave, still didn't come through. No fly.

No question you want to go with a fly/tarp over a canvas tent. If you are lucky enough to have a side exit for you stove pipe then its as easy as getting a good quality tarp. If not theres a guy on kijiji that sell stove jacks pretty cheap and putting one in a tarp is pretty easy.

If you opt not to have a fly, then just be sure not to touch the wall/ceiling of the tent if it is wet, Or put up a fly and sleep soundly. Your choice.

I just might have to try a fly and see. I know it will keep the bit of ash and soot off.

Fly or tarp the more protection from the elements the better.

Default Tarp

I never used to use a tarp but then I switched to an internal frame.
First time with the internal frame I planned to tarp but arrived late and the weather was good so I decided to leave it until morning. A storm blew in and I found out how much fun it is to string a tarp inside the tent to keep the beds dry til daylight.

I now never setup with the internal frame without the tarp.

With a fly you always have a nice big ground sheet to put the tent on for folding as well.

My tent with an internal frame will leak without the tarp as others have experienced.

My tent is 12'x14' (1989 purchase), it's never leaked but has several burn holes that I've patched, and out of respect to the old girl, I have gotten to throwing a tarp over it.
I tarp it from the end where your beds are down to as close to the stove as it reaches.

My plastic tarp has an ugly hole cut in it to cover the chimney pipe, burn holes are tough to patch.

A pair of scissors to cut chimney hole, the wasted tarp in back could be protecting some of your equipment in front of tent.

Some might view the use of a tarp as a way to better take care of your tent... I know I do.

No chance I would cut a hole in that tarp for a stovepipe hole. That couple of feet that is missed by the tarp doesn't worry me.

Default Never

Never used a tarp! When I bought my tent I also bought a weather resistant in which you set up with a water hose and soak the tent down and let dry! And after that never had a problem! Never with water leaking in Never! worked great!

Yep I’d agree more is better. Even if your not directly on the top Of the tent just another layer of protection to keep moisture off the top is going to make a world of difference.
