Default Wrapping Game in Saran Wrap Then Butcher Paper

Tried it last year. I can tell the difference between the ones I did that way and the ones I just butcher paper wrapped. Cheap way to preserve game longer, doesn’t take much more time and those big Saran Wrap rolls fro Costco aren’t that expensive

Skip the butcher paper and just use the Saran Wrap. I’ve been doing it that way for years, 4-5 beef, several hogs, game animals and fish. The only trick is a good marker to label the package, I use allflex tag pens or any other paint pen, sharpies smudge off as soon as you touch the package. If you don’t trust the Saran to stay sealed, roll it around quickly in a fry pan to melt the layers together, that trick requires a bit of technique.

Butcher/restaurant supply places have various widths and lengths of Saran to suit any size cut, even large primals.

I have purchased plastic bags from Butchers & Packers, Halfords and CTR in the past. They come in assortment of sizes for your needs. The pricing was not outrageous. I get the butcher paper there too. Meat goes in a bag then wrapped in butcher paper. I let it freeze for a few days, there’s no leakage this way. Then I vacuum seal. I believe the vacuum seal is what gives the greatest preservation.

I vaccuum sealed for a few years, and then I went back lol. Never liked how sometimes vaccuum sealed packages would loose their vaccuum on me in the freezer.

I'm a saran wrap and butcher paper fan now.

I love my vacuum sealer for various things but I agree.

A meat wrapper with a hot pad and a paper dispenser right beside it is quick. I can wrap 3 roasts for every 1 thats vac sealed.

To each their own...i dont need big game meat to last 3 years we go through it yearly.

Sarah wrap and paper is what ii do too. The paper protects the wrap and is easy to write on. It’s way faster and cheaper than vac packing but each to their own.
I’m a cheapskate.

Plastic bag with twist, then wrapped in butcher paper. Wife pulled out some moose meat from 4 years back and still no freezer burn. Very fast cheap and efficient. Some times stores will sell rolls in vegetable section when almost empty.

Another vote for Vac sealed meat and fish. Anything else you have to be sure to use it up within 6 months if you still want it to taste real good.

Me too. Plastic wrap then paper, seems to perform as well as vacuum sealed, less expensive and faster when processing.

When you twist end of plastic store bag not much air can be left, just as good as vacuum seal, much faster and much cheaper.

If u want to be perfect. Not cheap.
Double vac seal like Provost meat packers.

5 years later and fresh as day of freezing.

Why would you have to be careful?
The thing we like about vacuum sealing is that the meat gets sucked down to half its size or less and it takes up less room in our freezers.
My wife buys the small 5"x5"Styrofoam plates from the dollar store and we put our burger on those when we ate grinding .

I tend to agree with you Cat but... are you vac sealing the foam plates or meat? Sucked down to half? What kind of vacuum are you using? No abrasions on the sides of packages from sliding against a wire rack?

The foam plates are very thin and don't compress .
The bags are wide enough that the sides are not damaged by anything.
We use a cup to measure the meat out , when we put it on a piece of wax paper on the plate, the vacuum sealer socks it down flat .

This. I have been buying large rolls of heavy plastic bags from the local produce vendor for many years ($20 for 700 bags) and packaging my meat this way. It's pretty much as well protected as vacuum bagging, way faster and much less expensive.

Get a vac packer, better for the freezer, when vac packed, you can add what ever you want then vac pack,

I also use Vacuum bags. Yeah the rolls are a little cheaper but just adds another step and takes time. I buy the bags from Amazon for a fraction of the price at Cabela's and they are just as good (SurpOxyLoc 200 8"x12" bags cost $44, many sizes available).
