Thanks! For those wondering , as has been stated , trying to hunt up in this country for a big racked animal is really about as good as winning a lottery!
Sure, you will see the odd big moose or buck come out of this area, but the white tails are typically not large at all in the rack or body compared to down south 120 miles where the farmland starts , and neither are the moose .
Just as an example , a buddy showed me pics of five mule deer the first day he was scouting in his area this year, not one of those bucks was even near as small as mine, they were all at least twice that size.
Same as white tails. However , this is my home quarter so to speak, it's where I have lived and hunted for over 45 years , and Iove it!
This country either grows on you or you learn to detest it , and lucky for me, I fell in love with the wilderness of it right off.
Sadly, as time marches on, it is becoming less wild.......

That's it in a nutshell. It took me a few years to figure out hunting up Fort McMurray way when I first arrived and that's even with the bit of help I received from yourself. The first few seasons were a bit tough. I always managed to get some game but I spent a lot of time for the game I got. My best Whitetail actually came the first year I was up there and it was an old buck but wouldn't have scored better than the mid 150's. I was 3 hours in an open Argo one way at -30 to get into the area I got him out of. I've seen two that were bigger since but never with a rifle in hand.

In 2014 I remember spending a full 18 days out hunting and only seeing a combined 14 Whitetails in all those days. But, spend enough time and you get things figured out. I do agree on size though. A 40" bull up there is a good one. I've only saw with my own eyes 2 that would have gone bigger and neither would have broke 50". It's actually a pretty tough hunt to get any bull since the competition is high and access is low.

I moved the family down to Edmonton just over a month ago and I'm going to greatly miss the hunting up there. 9 seasons and I felt I was just getting my stride and I started really enjoying the area after the first few seasons. Now its all back to square one learning new areas down south but as I get older that becomes part of the fun...

Thanks! I know of people would have passed this buck down south, but i not down south, and for me, the trophy is a fun hunt and meat in the freezer, which we were able to do in spades that day!

That camo pattern is for sale at Mark's as well as most Peavey Marts - just ask for the standard farmer pattern duds!
