Sounds like we may see 3-5 cm by end of day tomorrow which may help if the wind doesn't take if all off and over Mameo.

Otherwise, I can always bring the quad. ... and skates

Have you ventured out to deeper water to see what ice depths are?12-14 inches is great for this time of year.

I was at Pigeon on December 5th a couple years ago when the ice was about 6 inches thick. I chipped a hole in about two feet of water along the north shore just to see how think the ice was. Looking down the hole I was amazed that it was non-stop whitefish swimming by. There must have been a couple hundred swim by. No interest in a hook at all.

Same thing at Gull a couple years ago. Opening day mid December I was ice fishing over 6 to 8 feet of water and mot seeing much. An oldtimer came out and drilled a hole 2 to 3 feet from shore. He limited out on whites in 20-30 minutes and left. I went to his hole and there was about 18 inches of water under the ice. I limited out in 30 minutes too. This was along the NNE shore.

Fishing at Smoke Lake near Fox Creek I was fishing before Christmas. I had 2 feet of water under the ice and the big whites would come screaming by and hammer the hook. Caught a few that were 8 to 9.5 lbs.

So it seems whites like the shallows in early to mid December and move deeper after Christmas.

was out on the ice today again finally 13 inches of hard as rock but by the time I came off just before dark the drifts were getting pretty deep. Drove out but I wasnt the first one, I figured if a truck and trailer could stay on top so would I . the wind was intense to the point the noises were causing quite the pucker, especially when the ice was moving up and down, but definitely worth it, I will post a separate report with some pics and vid. southern reservoir, wont say which til the ice is thicker

The other day there was 6-10 inches of ice on Eagle. People were driving out in full sized trucks and SUVs. Crazy. Given natural variable ice thickness.. I wait until there is at least 14-16 inches of ice before driving on. The negative impact on your insurance if covered, plus cost to remove the vehicle from the lake, plus fines if any… I’m not too lazy to walk the beginning of winter.
