I am spot and stalk bear hunting for the first time. Havent seen a bear yet up here but theres still lots of snow and things havent started greening up just yet. Haven't seen even a track yet so I'm hoping they just aren't up in force yet.

Best time for spot and stock is May long weekend . Any later and grass is green in the bush and they don't need to come out any more .
Any earlier than may long weekend only some of the cutlines have green grass and clover for them t eat .

Head net works well, without creating another smell.

Before it gets green on the ground (and when the leaves are just starting to come up on the poplars) look up - sometimes you can see them eating the fresh stuff in the tops of the trees.
Not my video, but shows what I mean: https://youtu.be/JJUd9WDatpc
I doubt you'll see big bruisers up there, though.

First week of May seems to be when they start moving around in my experience.

This ^^
I know guys seem to take them earlier baiting but when it comes to spot & stalk things start being worthwhile in May. Mid May to the first week of June has always treated me best
If I was to pick two weeks only last week of May first week of June. Big boars start cruising around looking for sows

Spring is late up in the bush country, lots of snow in the bush yet, mid to late May will be prime time this year

My twin brother is running a bait a couple hrs north of Edmonton. It’s his first year baiting and he’s had a medium sized boar on trail camera for the past 10 days. Fur looks excellent.
He sat for him this past weekend but no luck.
In Jasper there have been a few sightings, all boars.
Good luck to all you guys. I’m gonna try some spot and stalk in mid May with the kids. I swear they (age 6 and 8) will disown me if we don’t shoot a bear this spring, lol.

Some fair size bear can climb up for a good meal. I wouldn’t say bruisers, but definitely good size.
I posted a bit about it last year: http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showt...ar#post4523619
Overall, it is too early for a spot and stalk. About 3-4 more weeks, imo.

I won't head out for another few weeks, for sure. 3-4 sounds about right. Great excuse to head out into the woods this time of year.

Taking the year off baiting.
Too many grizz came in to our baits the last yr or so.
Near out-numbered the blacks,

Will probably shut down baiting in areas where Grizz have moved into.Cant have one getting shot by mistake, heaven forbid. Time for some action on a renewed hunt for the big bears.

No more baiting for me for years now, I wait until it greens up a big and spot and stalk, for me it's more about getting out hunting in the spring with my buddy, we're getting older and the time in the field is way more important than the harvest, we never got out last spring but plan to head out it in a couple weeks, if I do take one you can bet he will be big or he will keep walking.

Baits been up in saddle hills for a week now and no activity.. still snow in the bush in areas. Should be any day now the bears will be out of the dens and wandering. I suspect they aren’t travelling far from the dens with -2 temps at night still.

No bear activity east of Slave Lake to Martin Hills area and back to Calling Lake.
Some snow in the bush, but no green grass on the north faces yet. But it should start by May long weekend.
Now if only I could find my colour phase bear!

My former bear partner ran a bait in Woking country(S-Hills) there and has a bear on it as of 3-4 days ago.

100% some will be out and on the baits! Mines a brand new bait site so I do t expect good activity until early May once a few bears start finding it.
