Default hi guys need your advise on a bow

Hi my naem is Jordan, I am 20 years old and am new to hunting. I own a rifle and enjoy going out in the fall. This year i've been contemplating buying a bow. i've been looking at getting a PSE and see that Bass Pro has PSE packages for anywhere from 450-750. i was looking a getting one of the packages for around 700 (PSEŽ Archery Bow Madness RTS Compound Bow Package) I was just wondering if any of you experienced bow hunters could tell me if this would be a good investment or if I should just build a bow from the ground up instead of a package?? thanks for your time

I would personally would go to a proper bow shop and look at what they have to offer for package deals !! There are a lot of package deals around . Start of buy shooting as many bows as you can and see which one feels the best in your hand . Thats the biggest thing when buying a new bow . Its all how it feels and sits in ur hand ! Also how it feels when in your hand after u shoot it ..Don t buy a bow on how it looks or from what you see on tv ..

goodluck

Jordan, save yourself the headache most guys on here shop at Jimbows, it's only another 10 min south of Bass pro, chance are you know more about archery then they do. Jimbows has some great bows and packages, new and used and he will definatly sell you what fits you the best.Try all the bows you can, buy what makes your hand happy, take your time and make the right choice.

call north pro sports in saskatoon they have a new 09 bowtech admiral for sale and it looked like it was a hell of a deal for 950 i think. the package was bow, sight, rest, quiver, stabilizer, arrows, release, and case i think there might have bin more and it all looked like top of the line stuff. i would say that it would be over 1300 easy for the setup the had there. and the bow is in my openion the best all around hunting bows made. forgiveing, accerate, good speed , short axle to axle, dead quit and dead in your hands, but dont buy a bow that doesnt fit you or you dont like how it all around feels it is the most inportant thing when buying a bow is to buy it for its feel and not looks or speed

I am going to stay on topic and agree with what PM and BM said...

Go to a bow shop and get it done right the first time...

I would build a bow rather then buy a package deal. This way you can look at all different types of accessories and pick the ones that best suit your needs and budget..

Good luck....

I agree...go to an archery shop and get set up! They have ranges and can set you up with several to try. Buy what feels right for you and the best in your hand.

As far as "most guys on here shopping at Jimbows" I disagree. Sorry Pottymouth, i assume that you work at Jims due to the fact that many of your posts mention this shop. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with doing this but we do have other "larger" options availible in town as well. There are other archery shops and places to try out. The Calgary archery center is my shop of choice (P.S i don't work there). Try out both and see how it goes!

Good Luck!

You should hold up on buying that bow till the 2010 alberta hunting regs are out.because word around calgary,is that your going to be allowed to cross bow hunt in the archery season next fall.I'm going to go with the excaliber x-bow!!!!

Hey Jordan,

When buying your first bow you'll want to get something that you can grow with, especially at your age. Package deals are nice, best you won't have the best of everything. However, that being said you don't know what you like/don't like, etc.

I would shoot as many bows as you can at anyone of the archery shops (BPS, Calgary Arch center, jimbows, etc) When you first arrive tell them you are interested in trying several bows to find one that fits you properly. Accessories (sights, stabalizer, rest, release, silencers, peep) all come after you find a bow that fits right.

Unfortunately, these "ready to shoot" package deals don't offer any bargainning so if you don't like the wisker biscuit is comes with, too bad, you probably won't get a discount for getting a different rest. (There are acceptions of course).

These are my recommendation for a beginner

A compound bow that fits right, feels right & naturally, shoot nicely (good consistent groups)
single cam
drop away rest
3 pin fiber optic sight
peep sight
mechanical release

Get a good anchor point!

Actually ,elkhunter69, I don't work at or for Jimbow's, I just like people to know where top notch quality service is found in the Calgary. Jim has always been service minded first and then sales, and he can afford to do that because he isn't " larger ". I've seen alot of people post here about Jimbow's and it's always positive, beacuse he treats all his customers like his own friends. Everyone has an opinion and this is mine, I want service, expierence, honesty and knowledge. I enjoy top quality professionalism and I don't find it anywhere else ....sorry. Plus Jimbow's has no paid staff shooters, thus no overhead, and that keeps his prices lower than other places. I've learned alot from Jim, and he deserves alot of credit.

Now I know you will disagree, and all the other shops staff shooters will post, but again I AM SAYING MY OWN OPINION. If some business goes out of there way to do something good for an individual, then as a consumer i would want to know about it. That's why we all come here and read all the posts on here.

Hey Jordan,

I'm not sure on this 100% but i think Bass Pro carries alot of there own bows and special lines that just they carry. You might save a few dollars but i'm not sure what you will end up with. Id recomend a local archery shop instead. I use the Calgary archery center for all my gear, repairs and archery issues. Get a shop worker to show you all the bows that they can recommend and look for one that fits you the best and feels the best in your hand. Then make sure to actually shoot them. They have 2 very large ranges and once the xmas season is over and things slow down the shops will have lots of time to spend with you. Good luck with your search!

Default Take your time

Jordan, I would say the samething most bowhunters are saying on here, check out all the bows in your price range.Look what you like the best and what feels the most comfortable in your hand. Narrow your options down to two and do your due diligence on both. Then go to either shop (Calgary Archery Center, or Jimbow's ) and both will be very helpful at setting you up. I heard a couple of people say they had problems with Bass Pro, with their bows, mostly strings popping off and other failures. Stick to the two expert shops in town, and shoot all the diffrent makes and models you can before dropping some major cash.
