I use a Ketchum hook release like that all the time. Slide your taut tippet through the slotted side, and then run it down into the trouts mouth - over the fly - and against the bend in the hook. You then gently push the hook slightly deeper into the trouts throat to dislodge the hook point. Keep the tippet taut, and back it out.
Works with most thin-bodied flys. Not so well with big bodied nymphs or boobies. Then you need to resort to a cut-off, notched toothbrush handle !
