It's a weekday...call up the local Biologist because I too would like to know where all the moose went in that wmu and other parkland zones.

Talk to the locals they will tell you where lots of them go. Unregulated harvesting. Seems like everyone has a card.

They are handing out "cards" left and tight these days. It will excellerate the decimation of our moose population even further.

The problem is the handing out of cow and bull tags like halloween candy. Look at the draw stats for the last few years. More than quadrupled the number of tags in those zones. For whatever reason they are trying to wipe out the prairie moose
Don't know of much unregulated hunting on the prairies for moose. Be tough getting permission for that

As mentioned, be tough getting access in 160 without permission, tougher yet to get around unnoticed. Distant relatives are landowners within and no permission is granted to family.
The go to of unregulated hunting being the cause of low numbers or succes rates is not so applicable here.
Been part of a few hunts in WMU 166 to the north for last couple of seasons. No shortage of antlered or antlerless moose in that WMU, we seen a few good sized groups of elk as well, but no tag so just watched them slip away.

Default Moose Hunting Hard Everywhere

This is by far the most difficult year hunting moose for us. Friends hunting in zones west and north saying the same thing.
Warm weather and dryness added to the difficulty. My dad finally got his cow on Saturday but it wasn’t easy. An emotional hunt as he said this will be his last year at 87. He’s the one taught my brother and I and we have passed on the lessons to our kids.
Keep looking still have 3 days. Don’t give up!

166 is done as far as trophy bulls go. Biggest I heard of and seen was a 47”. For every 6-8 cows I saw would be 1 bull. And nothing over 30”. I know I’ll be applying for cow, get a tag every 3 years. Instead of 8-10 years to shoot a little 40”er at best if you can find one! Lots of outfitter bull tags also.

Yup the government "nuked" 166 pretty good in regards to the moose tags being given out over the last 5 years...if your after a trophy bull 166 aint the place to be until/if they cut back the tags a bunch and build up the age of the moose in the wmu.
