Ambulances will never go electric, as they run steady for extreme hours every day. Except possibly in the chitties like Edmonton or Calgary.

Quebec is selling an all electric ambulance with a range km run distance.

In Calgary. That probably works out to what 4-5 trips then it needs recharging.

Or fewer trips if it needs to idle in emergency waiting for space to offload a patient.

Also wonder how much heavier it would be and what issues that poses in snow.

I’m not sure about that. There’s already EV police cars and they generally don’t get shut off during your shift in the winter. Not to mention most ambulances get stored in a bay while cop cars get to stay outside.

In the cities I don't think ambulances see much storage time. There is a lot of ideling time spent at the hospitals waiting to get released from your patient.
The compartment needs to be kept warm during those times.

I’ve never heard of an EV ambulance but it would be hard to find a vehicle that spends as much time in a place where it could be plugged ins as they do. They all have designated parking spots at every hospital , and by the time the patients are handed over, and reports given, and the vehicle cleaned for the next patient they could be charged 5 times over….and kept warm by being plugged in.

Ev don’t necessarily idle do they? I thought they only run when are moving. Now as far as the systems that run the medical equipment goes, I guess that’s different. I imagine they would be like city busses. All electric except for the diesel generator and the diesel heaters 😂

Most emergency vehicles, be it fire, police, ambulance, snow plows, don't run on fixed schedules, so taking time to charge during a shift isn't practical, until battery technology improves significantly.

Default All Censored.

Would be nice if the admins would report issues with these EVs, they'll be bragging up a storm if they're a success and burying the ball if they're not.

Creeky....

Didn’t a bunch of Calgary’s EV busses and trains shut down in this cold?

Maybe in the urban setting but rural ambulance often will have a couple hours between getting plugged in. Not uncommon to see a ambulance stagged on our structure fires for several hours.

The same happens in the urban setting. All I'm saying is that ambulances end up sitting for a very large percentage of their shift (unlike on TV), and most of that is at an ER bay.
My bet would be building them on something like the Ford or Toyota hybrid platform. Tons of electricity produced (ambulances use lots of electricity) and very efficient gas back-up. Pretty much the best of both words.

True, that's why they are spec'ed with dual alternators.

A hybrid makes more sense, but it isn't what the green fanatics want, they want no burning of fossil fuels.

I'm excited for the EV future, but it's clear to me there still needs to be some major breakthrough(s) in battery technology to make this work. Especially for first responder vehicles.

Could be worse anyway. Could be still using 6.0L diesel ambulances...
