Hard to believe the crown is thinking about appealing this....
.... nothing worse than an aggrieved police force bullying folks. Vindictive. Just ban vans.

I'm concerned about the alleged collusion of the witness officers, and if there will be any consequences.

Police did this to themselves. Why aren’t their actions being looked at for charges? What they did cost a life and just about destroyed another. Reprehensible.

He wouldn't have ran over anyone had it not been for the thugs actions. If anyone is charged it should be the thugs for attempted car jacking causing a collateral death. They should be convicted for murder.

So it’s OK that the police did this?

Not Ok, but don't expect consequences.

This story should have been worded better. There were no carjackers, the plain clothes officers were mistaken for carjackers due to their actions and either:
1. Not identifying themselves properly when they swarmed the vehicle, or
2. Not identifying themselves at all, until after the damage was done.
This paragraph is the tell:
Quote:
A key issue at trial was whether Northrup and his partner had identified themselves as police officers. The officers say they did; Zameer claims they didn’t or at least he didn’t hear them do so. In any event, though, I wouldn’t put impersonating a police officer beyond your average carjacker.
|
He was swarmed and boxed in, with no further information available, he reacted in a reasonable manner.
The surviving officers will not be charged with murder/ manslaughter, as they are uniformed professionals who can do no wrong.

Even when their stupidity got one of their own killed.

I followed this and there was a strong appearance of collusion between officers. Their testimony didn’t match the facts and evidence including car damage, video etc.
Most people I feel would do something similar.
If I had my 2 year old in the back seat and pregnant wife in the front seat and some stranger tried to get into my vehicle in a parking garage… I’d floor it.
Police screwed up in their approach and process here and it cost them a life.
Should be a text book what not to do and not blame the victim whom must be extremely traumatized. First by the attempted car jacking. Second knowing a person does. Third the trial.
Sad all round.

With the police testimonies not matching the evidence, I would think that the police would just want this to go away, before more people hear about it.

These officers are beyond despicable. To lie to put an innocent man in prison for the rest of his life.... I cannot imagine how dark your soul would have to be, it is heart breaking to think they will still be doing their job and not be behind bars for their crime.

Both them and the crown prosecutors should be in jail for the rest of their lives.

Interesting article.

Exactly! When one of their own is killed, there seems ro be no limits to what they will do to try and get a conviction.

Agreed. A man is dead, jailing an innocent father doesn’t change that.
That’s how cops behave all the time though.

The better question is how many times has this already happened?

This is what happens when special police task forces become a law unto themselves. All one has to to is look what happened down South in Baltimore. The special police task force put together to combat drugs and gangs went rogue. It is well documented in a book, " We Own This City". I believe there is a mini-series on HBO based on the book. Very disturbing.

“I thought I and Aaida made a wrong decision when we thought we should go to Canada, that it’s a better place for our kids,” Zameer told reporters. “But I think today I see that Canada didn’t let injustice happen. So I thank Canada.
Even though things were really bad after all was said and done he still managed to take the high road.
Well done.

The really sad part, is that defending himself likely bankrupted him.

Criminal lawyers to defend you in a murder trial aren't cheap. Even people found not guilty are punished heavily financially.

If a person is found innocent the crown ought to foot the defense bill, that would cut out a lot of bs trials. Crown prosecutors are looking to make a name for themselves so they can slide into defense jobs, they pay a lot more. Unfortunately justice is the looser, and they console themselves by saying I was just doing my job.

All I was saying is he took the high road and seems grateful
Now the financial cost or the burden he carries you and I have no clue about.

Of course it's possible that he had a free legal aid
lawyer, or that some lawyer took his case for free, but more likely, he hired a lawyer, since he was facing a
murder charge. Most people that aren't very wealthy, take huge financial hits, when forced to defend themselves, in a murder trial.
