I don't like 270's ( or pre 64's)!
I must have lost my mind!
Horse trading last night and this followed me home.
it seemed like a good idea at the time.
All this talk lately about 270's, pre64's, the rifleman's rifle, and all that other stuff got me thinking.
I don't particularly like the 270 , no reason, it's just me, nothing really against it.
I prefer to shoot the 6.5X55 with 140 or 160 grain bullets
I'm not particularly fond ( some say hate!) bolt action sporters, I prefer falling blocks or express guns.
Steel butt plates make me cringe.
I'm not even really fond of optics unless they are on a target rifle !
So HOW THE HELL did I end up with this in my gun room!!
It's a 1947 pre'64 in 270 with transition safety, fitted with a Griffon and Howe detachable mount and Lyan Alaskan 2 1/2X scope!

Cool unit. They are becoming harder to find, and outragously priced (IMO). What you gonna do with it ?

Nice beater Cat. Weak action, light bullets, looks like somebody's trunk gun...or loaner. Oh well, as long as your happy. I hope it wasn't a very good horse that you traded.
I prefer 150's in my 270. Mod 70 featherwt, schnable forend......with fiddleback the whole length of the stock (that's why I bought it). Got used a cpl of times and now sits in the rack and looks purdy. took me a while to get a load worked up, but I was insisting that it shoot 150's. After I put a pressure pt about an inch from the fore-end tip (all the fw's seem to need one), it shot quited nicely. Secret formula gets 3010 fps with 150's. Not for shooting in warm weather.
Riflemans rifle.....well that as we know could be debated...or in the case of this forum flogged to death for days.
Anyway.....enjoy. Kinda neat to see with all that period-correct stuff on it.

Nice rifle! I'm getting the impression that Model 70's are not very popular on this forum from a few comments and can't understand why but that is a sweet find anyway.

Thanks!
FWIW, I always leaned kinda towards the Keith camp as opposed to the O'Connor supporters - most times, anyway!

The period stuff is correct, you bet!
it's what makes the whole package for me.
The horse? I't not over yet!!
It may go back yet and get turned into a McPhee barrelled 300 SAUM No.1 with a Canjar set trigger!

Sell it to one of those collector guys that thinks it's worth a whole lot of money. Add some providence to it and away you go. "Yip..this is the rifle Jack O'conner used on his Grizz hunt in Alberta the spring of '54. It was a tough year... and they hadta shoot 3 of their pack horses for bait instead of only one......yadda yadda yadda".

First thing I thought when I read the first post and saw the pic, was "Jack O'Connor gun". That would make it attractive for me to want to shoot something with it (a Cowes deer maybe).
I have one Win. M70 (in the BIG 6.5, .264 win. mag) and the only other one I really have a yen for would be a Featherweight in 6.5X55.

Yup, bad ju-ju!
Maybe I should move it like inn the movie Far and Away, when Tom Cruise comes out and his horse is dead at the rail
Old Timer walks by and says " That's the oldest horse I ever saw"!!
It DOES shoot well however.....

Oh man, looks to me you have the exact same rig as I have except I have mine in .30-06 pre-64 with a 2X lyman alaskan scope (side mounted). If you are ever considering getting rid of it or looking for a trade, let me know.
