Default Least temp sensitive powders

What are your experiences with powders in different temperatures. Ive got my 270 dialed in on some H4831, 308 on IMR 4064 and my 257 weatherby using IMR 7828. Ive got some Winchester 760 and can get the 308 shooting not bad with it. Ive heard it is not as temperature sensitive as the other powders.

Ball powders to extruded....pros and cons of both?

thanks everyone.

Have a look on the Hodgdon website and take the Extreme Tour, it will answer a lot of questions.
How's the 308 shootin???

Ball powders = most temperature sensativity, they are prone to pressure spikes in warm weather, and be a real problem to get good ignition in cold weather.

Try some Varget in your 308.
And some H1000 in the 270 and 257 Wtby.

This is a good question that I think a lot of us reloaders should look at more closely.

I find huge variations in shotshell powders when it comes to temperature.

Thanks everyone. Im gonna play with some varget when the chance arrives in the 308. At the moment it is doing 3/4" at 100 yards with 46 grains of IMR 4064. 2.80 col 165 gr core lokts. 2750 fps.

I know this gun will do better just gotta play. I can get some good velocity out of W760 with 51 grains but found its got some pressure to it. groups around an inche with 2830 fps. Ive backed it off to 50 grains and seeing 1 inche groups still with 2730 fps.

I want to go with a better bullet, i may try some accubonds in the girl next chance i get.

If you want some serious accuracy in the .308 the 168-175gr sierra matchkings and 168-178gr hornady AMAX bullets are hard to beat. The Accubonds Ive tried in my rem LTR rifle don't seem to shoot as well as the nosler ballistic tips and they cost a lot of mulla. In my rifle varget or rl-15 and the 175gr matchkings equals .25moa to .4moa when Im in good practice.

I sure agree on the RL 15 in the 308!

I loaded some 165 Sierra Game Kings for a friends Rem Model 7, in 308. It ran 2740 fps from the 20" barrel and shot 1/3" groups. I used Sierra's maximum load of Varget, for the 168 Match King, with the 165 GK seated to 2.8" OAL. This is an awesome hunting round in a 308. I didn't try the MK's as this was a hunting rifle but with 1/3" groups this rifle could be competitive with the 165 GK's.

Another plus for Varget is that is likely quite a bit less temperature sensitive with less lot to lot variation than RL 15.

I know RL15 has a big lot to lot spread. If your gun likes it buy a bunch in the same lot. I went to Hodgdon powders to keep the temp swings down as I have seen 25+ to -40 in hunting season. A little help is a good thing. I have found that RL15 is becoming my favorite though.
