Time to upgrade...???
It's time to upgrade my rifle. I currently have a British 303...
I am looking at:
Savage 16 /116
Tikka t3
Remmington 700 bdl
And then the 2nd question...
30-06, 7mm rem mag, or 300 win mag???

All three are good rifles, choose the one that suits you. As for chambering, I prefer the 7mmremmag over the other two choices.

This is where my esteemed colleague and i tend do disagree - when it comes to cartridge choice, because it is just that, a choice.
Each of us DO agree that one may not be any better than the other, but we have our preferences.
Myself, of the three , I would go with the '06, but if it was wide open , it would be a T3 lite in 6.5X55!

Before Cat and Elk get you too confused ( ) it is a simple problem to solve. Buy 1 Gun of each you have mentioned, then you can cover off the 3 caliber choices!!!....EASY!!! Voila!!!!

Exactly, I am a fan of the 7mms, and wouldn't own a 30-06, while the Cat is not known to be a fan of the magnums.

Ok.. well I have another option I would like to through into question. I spent an hour or so at Bass Pro in Calgary looking at the different guns. I really like the Tikka T3; like the hunter model the most. So I think I have that question answered for myself, just had to run the bolt a couple times and loved it.
But for the second question.... This is going to be the hard decision for me.
I primarily hunt deer, but also hunt elk and moose with everything in the Sundre area. Most of the shots I will make are within 300 yards, it is unlikely (but possible) that I would exceed that. And I forgot a pretty popular 270 in the mix, so where I stand today trying to decide - 270, 30-06, or 7mm rem mag??? I have eliminated the 300 win mag.
I am leaning towards the 30-06 or 270 primarily for pricing of ammo. suggestions?

According to the locals there soon won't be many elk or moose left there because of the exploding wolf population....
I would think the .270 since it gives you a flatter shooting (non-magnum) cartridge that is still capable for moose and elk... it is "more different" to the .303 than the 30-06 is if you're using factory ammunition.
Of course, everyone has their favorite. Ask 12 guys on this forum and you'll get about 8 different answers.

Accuracy issues aside, 180 grains trumps 130 any time at distance in my book.
get the '06 and don't look back!

My pick , 30-06 with 165 gr partitions. Good for everything .
But I shoot a stick and string, and a 54cal Flint lock will make it's way to the woods this fall.

A 270 win or 270 wsm is all you need to take any Canadain game in my opinoin . The 270wsm seems to be takeing over the prairies as a go to rifle and bullet selection and avalibility are getting better all the time. Just my 2 cents

Not sure about availability but the Sako A7 is the same price as the Tikka, as for cartridge I'd say any of the 4 will do the same job at 300 yards so get the biggest that you can comfortably handle the recoil, for me that would be the 30-06.

Spend the extra few bucks and get the stainless steel version.

06
There are lots of experts here who know more than I do. When I was buying my first rifle, I hunted with an expert. He shot a 264 mag. used it for everything, coyotes to moose. He said don't buy one, get an 06. I reload and have shot everything from .22 accelerators to 220 gr. silver tips.
Have lots of different ones now, but I think the advice was sound. There is no other caliber that has as many different bullets, recipes, and versatility.
As far as the gun manufactures are concerned you'll have to ask someone else.

Nice try Cat... quoting the larger common choice in 30-06 and the smaller common choice in .270 LOL I've never shot anything but 150g out of my .270, which I think would do the trick on anything the OP would want to bring down.
Having said that, hard to go wrong with a 30-06 as your only gun. But if you would prefer a touch less recoil (closer to the .303) the .270 would be the ticket.

I quoted those two because they are the two that generally are used.
that being said, often times they are the only ones available as well.
That is wh i recoom3nded the '06 for the heavier animals.
FWIW, I own neither at this time , but have killed stuff with both over the years
, and neoither would be my first choice - but then anybody who shoots the cartridges and fire arms I like to shoot has to be mor ethan a little bent, be it the choice of shotgun OR rifle!!

where do you live?
I am asking this for a simple reason.
I live in a small town and ammo is limited.
The local hardware store carries 303, 30-06 30-30 and 270, .22 and12ga and 177 pelets. That is it. If you live in a small town far from major cities it is something to consider.

You won't go wrong with any of those calibers. Having said that I'm a fan of the 30.06, and not the 7mm Mag or .270win. there's nothing wrong with them, I just don't plike them. One of the main reasons I like the 06 is just the availability of ammo and variety. its everywhere from cheap surplus ammo to expensive custom ammo. As already mentioned the small towns will have a smaller selection should you loose your ammo or run out. Good luck
