End of ice fishing season for me
I was lucky to have a bunch of AOF members out fishing over the winter. Always fun… especially for those with kids.
My ice fishing stuff is put away for this season so next time to ice fish for me will be next season. In case people were still hoping to get out, please note I may not be on AOF for a while.
Cheers everyone and hope folks can still get out before spring.
Stay warm and safe on the ice!
Cheers
Sun

Made it out before the closure for one last session, now the wait for open water. Biggest perch I've come across all winter and biggest brown I've ever caught out of the lake.

Caught a number of 8-9.75 inch perch over the past week.
Biggest brown is 19 inch. Biggest rainbow 22 inch. Brookie 14 inch.
Weird year. Tons of little perch again. Need to stock more predators yearly. Put more brooks and browns in Oct 2021 and will do it again going forward. If the browns and future tigers start eating perch we will have some monsters someday.
Then the perch can grow bigger again.

Cool. Lake froze over last night.
Cold wind and snow did wonders in bringing the lake temperature down.
My personal ice tracking has seen…
Ice came off the lake on: April 30, 2009, April 7, 2010, April 23, 2013, April 24, 2014, March 31, 2015, March 28, 2016, April 20, 2017, May 1, 2018, April 19, 2019, April 28, 2020, April 15, 2021, April 8, 2022
The lake froze over on: November 19, 2010, November 16, 2011, November 15, 2012, November 14, 2014, November 26, 2016, November 7, 2017, November 19, 2018, November 9, 2020, November 20, 2021, November 8, 2022
Can’t see signs of global warming in this short term data.

Very cool. Although I believe it’s called climate change now. And your dates seem to change every year, so…

Lol. Is does change.
Also I checked last evening and the cold and clear skies and lack of wind did see the whole lake freeze over.
Froze solid today. Measured an inch at one spot.
I cringe seeing FB posts of people out on 2 inches of ice.
Once open for fishing… likely around Christmas give or take depending upon the weather, I’ll be seeing who wants to slay perch.
Nothing says relaxing like a pile of perch around your chair.

It is awesome that you provide this kind of access for kids and people that want to ice fish in the city. My kids and I have been out the last 2 years with you (Tyler brought his camera with him last year and still talks about the feeding frenzy videos)
It's very generous for you to open up access and spend the time out there. Just wanted to say it is very much appreciated!
We are looking forward to another opportunity this year!

Who doesn’t like seeing kids catching fish. It’s so much fun meeting and fishing with fellow AOF members.
I just purchased a bunch of new jigs cause they trout are getting bigger.

I think I’m going to recommend folks use a high quality 8 lb supple ice fishing line due to the bigger trout. If you are a seasoned ice angler… 6 lb is still my go too.
I still like chartreuse or orange or perch pattern for perch. Occasionally silver or bronze.

Once the lake is open I’ll put out when I can take folks.
Without a big tent… fishing outside will be the norm. So warm days with light wind will be tops of the list for timing.

Lake is open. Very cold so a tent and heater is a necessity.

Who wants to come slay a bucket load of perch tomorrow?
I will be heading out at 10 am tomorrow.
You need maggots and small tungsten jigs and a sensitive spring bobber or a small float.
6 pound mono is what I use.
