The Oilers are at the peak of their potential. All cylinders are firing on that team, anything is possible now but I wouldnt expect any sort of increase in performance with the team as it stands.

How crazy would a Oil / Phlemmers 1st round be considering how much they hate each other?.....
I don't know if my heart could take the stress, but that would be a round for the ages.

It’s quite possible! If Calgary keeps overachieving and makes playoffs, you may just get your wish!!!

Wouldn't exactly say it's my "wish" for that to happen, just that it would be quite the series. The problem is whoever comes out of it would be really beat up for round 2.

The way it is stacking up though is we will most likely have an all Canadian 1st round. unless the coyotes jump the Canucks, 2nd and 3rd in the Pacific will be 2 Canadian teams

Yup. It has been the most interesting finish to the season that I can recall in a very long time. Great to be a fan of whichever team you cheer for.

Seems bizarre that Calgary has to play Sub par for you guys to remain competative with us in the standings yet you guys view it as a total dominating moral victory.

Are they underachieving?
Maybe as a flames fan you see it so....
Maybe last year they overachieved?
Maybe both?

The vast majority of the time, with limited travel, familiarity, last change, etc., teams play better at home. Even Ottawa (17 wins vs 6) and Detroit (10 wins vs 5) have considerably better records at home vs on the road. The Flames are 15-16 at home and 20-17 on the road. So, to underachieve, they'd actually be going about it in a more difficult manner by having a better road record. Know any other teams that are taking the difficult path to under achieve?
If you're a Flames fan, you almost want them to finish lower in the standings at this point so they are a visiting team for the playoffs. Is beating Boston, Colorado, Dallas, Philly, etc. on the road and then losing multiple times to the Kings at home as easy as "they are right where they should be."? I don't think so.

Wild can leap frog the Canucks and Jets tonight for 1st wildcard.
Oilers can move back into 1st.
Friday night is going to be crazy with 5 games involving 8 western teams still in the playoff picture.
Fun times

So they are overachieving on the road and should actually be lower in the standings.

Yup, if you completely ignore this, "So, to underachieve, they'd actually be going about it in a more difficult manner by having a better road record.", which it seems you did. Lots of factors to consider, better record against playoff teams vs non-playoff teams as well, which doesn't fit with your theory either.

You make it sound like this is some great big mystery that only people in Edmonton know the answer to. Not one hockey analysts will tell you the Flames have had a good season, they all will say it has been an off season for the Flames and that the Oilers are doing quite well. People in the Edmonton region want to ignore any sort of talk like that and essentially generate their own alternate universe.

15/16 77pts. 5th in pacific
16/17. 94pts. 4th in pacific
17/18. 84pts. 5th in pacific
18/19. 107pts. 1st in pacific
19/20. 95pts ??? 3rd in pacific ???
One year out of the last five doesn’t fit can you guess which one.
You Flames fans think your team should be a power house in the league cause of last year. String a few back to back 100 plus point years and make it out of the first round before you start to consider them in the same realm as Boston.
Reality is they are a good team but not a great team. The same core of players have had what 3-4 coaching changes and still the same results. Make the playoffs twice and accomplish nothing in the post season. Hardly the mark of a powerhouse team. They are what they are.
All is not doom and gloom though. Making the playoffs in this league is a success in itself. Half the teams don’t make it but I am confident that the Flames will this year.
The last few years of playoff hockey has shown that if you get in anything can happen.

I don't think that's the case at all. I think both teams are above the mean average but certainly not cup favorites unless one or both catch lightning in a bottle. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
My biggest reason for doubting both as cup contenders? Goaltending. Not one of the 4 is likely to take you on a deep run.

The way the D is playing tonight, he is gonna need to pot 6 for a win tonight looks like. Just one puck watching fire drill after another. Numbers look bad for Smith, but he has had zero support tonight, and lots of traffic all night in front.

Haven't seen any of the game. Sounds like it's not worth the effort of turning it on
