Default Barbless Hooks

Is cold lake barbless? Where in the Alberta or Saskatchewan regs does it state this? Saskatchewan regs say it's consistent with Alberta but I couldn't find it. It would make sense that it is.

Falls under Alberta regs though...maybe just pinch two of the three on the treble hook

Default Cold lake up dates 2015

I was stopped by a warden in the winter and he didn't say a thing about my barbed hooks. You can run barbed.

I talked to fish and wildlife this winter. If you get into Saskatchewan then you need to pinch your barbs. Once back in Alberta you can have barbs again

Went up t break in a buddies new boat this past weekend Spent 5 days and 4 nights. Landed 118 Lakers and probably lost 100. He only lost his lunch twice of the side of the boat as the lake can get pretty rough. Most were on downriggers but some were jigging.

I was up last weekend as well. Lot's of under sized Lakers. Almost impossible to catch a 75 now. I also noticed that they are absolutely stuffed like little footballs. Minnows puking out of their months. Lot's of dead ones floating as well. I assume due to them been so fat and their bladders rupturing on the way up. The regulations on Lake Trout on this lake are so backwards. How nice would it be to keep a 5-7 pound trout for a meal and let the big slow growing girls get to keep breeding big quality fish? It almost makes me sick to my stomach. That's why I focus my attention on the abundant Walleye and Pike populations. Get em while you can because Alberta Government will mess them up too.

I totally agree letting go dead fish isnt my cup of tea anymore, a one fish limit is counter productive if u kill 10 undersized fish to get a legal fish. IMO the size of trout has decreased on cold lake. All you have to do is look to northern manitoba to see a proper size restriction, 2 fish none over 65cm if i remember right......

Stomach's are fat as they are being brought up to quickly from depth. Gotta work the smalls ones up slowly so they can burb out air. Otherwise their done for.

We hit a lot between 52 and 95. It seems there are fish everywhere in that lake. I had my best luck at 57-65, my Father in law who was in the same boat was hitting them at 73 all day long. I would suggest starting around 60 and work up or down from there, that's what I do anyway.

What Kurt said.

I had his son in my boat all weekend and he liked 53' down in 100' of water. I hit them all over when I could play. some at 120', others at 45 and 80.
Also jigged for some when marking on the bottom.

Basically watch your sonar and play for awhile

Thanks again for the hospitality on the weekend! We sure fished the heck out of that place. I just hope I can get my son to stop singing Bon Jovi!

Wow if we could only keep one fish, out last night and it was non stop with undersized fish, one took some time to revive, action packed but I am going to have to settle for a can of tuna!

Hope all these little fellas grow up to be 30 pounders!

Went out this weekend with Viral Overide

Waters were rough Saturday but we still fished for 11 hours, not many other boats out there all day, seen about 5 near the PP in the evening when we got back.
Landed 60 fish between the 2 of us.
Went back out today for 4 hours before packing up camp, landed 15 more.

Had a heavy one today that was 74cm, so back she went, didn't weigh it. Had a couple yesterday that were right on 75cm but too close for comfort so we had hamburgers for supper.

None retained out of 75 landed but had an amazing weekend none the less

Default Tip for tastes Lakers

Lakers are a fatty fish, especially the ones the Alberta esrd think should be the keepers

When filleting lakers, not only making them boneless, but trimming the fat is a must. There is fat along the back, fat along the belly, and fat down the center along with the grey meat. Trim this off and you will have some great tasting fish.

My father in law filleted a laker then invited us over for supper, he didn't trim it up. Then I filleted a laker and we invited them over for dinner. Night and day difference in taste. A little extra time and care while filleting will make all the difference when your dealing with lakers.
