Fishing was a little slow put truck and trailer about 1/4 mile out from PP ramp 27 fow then chased trout with quad. Out from ramp was 14-15 inches of ice was no problem camping there

Still seems a little thin for our heavy rig ,only takes another truck to pull up to chat to make it break. I wonder if its allowed to camp over night in that parking lot .

WE Were CAMPING ON ICE PP WITH 3/4 TRUCK DSL AND 9 FT CAMPER NO CAMPING ON PARKING NO SLED NO ATV CHEERS

Good to hear you camped on the ice safely .
I also called the Fish cop at Cold lake that looks after that area.
Very nice guy ,he confirmed no camping or unloading in that parking lot.
But he did say ...Free winter camping in french bay campground.

Drive 50 ft off shore and make camp there? Lots of ice, not breaking any rules.

Never did understand why they will not allow you to unload in the parking lot and take your bike/sled onto the ice. Instead they want you to drive your salty rig onto the ice n offload there. As per original post also chance of breaking through ice and having fluids go into lake. Sure fine anyone who drives through the park site but 100 yards on the road to the lake. Really!!!!

He said in the past people did unload in the parking lot then drive to the lake,others would see them driving on the road and figure it was alright and they would start driving all over the roads including trails etc. So they but a stop to it all.

On another note sledders and ATV's can scoot into the ski hill lodge for some grub too.
Don't boot around on the provincial park roads or trails...you will pay a fine, ignorance is no excuse, 2007...$275.00 later

Was there Sunday caught 17 in 2.5 hrs 5 over 75 ice varied from 12 to 17 inches but did find some 8 inch ice going tomorrow fun to catch when bite is on all release no worse for ware

Sunday Cold Lake Fishing
Heading out soon to try my luck on Cold Lake. Stopped by the Provincial boat launch yesterday, lots trucks/trailers parked on the ice. Seen a truck driving across to the sandbar and one parked there. Going out to the Ling cod bed. Taking skidoo. Heard still only about 14inches ice out there. Will give it a try.

Sunday Cold Lake Fishing2
Ok, went out today, very very very slow. Couple of bites, had my flasher and could see them following my hook up and down but wouldn't bite. Must've had the wrong color but using the cold lake special. Anyway, fishing just to the east of the Ling bed, 120ft, measured 15inches ice, some flood water. Checked out a couple of holes from some fellas that were about 100m to the north east of me after they left, could see they were catching the odd one and couldn't believe there was only 12inches ice and major flood water. Ice thickness varies a lot, be a while before I take my diesel out there. Oh well, it was a nice day anyway, still better than my best day at work! Be heading to Spencer come the weekend. Was there a week ago and some decent walleye, caught two there over 48cm but you gotta throw them away. Slot size there...

Anyone willing to share ice thickness from this past weekend? Were headed up for the long weekend but heard that the ice was not great?

I wouldn't drive on based on what I have heard. 2 weeks ago there was still only 6 inches of ice in spots and guy above said he found 8 inches a week ago.
If you are walking/quadding will be fine, sounds like there is a bunch of flood water in places so bring rubber boots.

Out on Sunday. Pockets of flood water everywhere. Some brave guys driving trucks on the ice, we decided to take the side-by-side 14-18inchs of ice. lots of cracks and a few small heaves. fishing was ok.

Looking for some advice fellas,
Visiting for the first time this weekend as we are visiting family.
Bringing my gear, rods, two man flip up, power auger.
Just got into ice fishing this last year. Hope to target my first ice Laker, I will have a couple of hours to get out.
I will be a walking and dragging my sled, pretty heavy.
No electronics
Purchased some cold lake specials for the trip.
Been reading ifish and these reports.
Would my best chance be to head out from the Marina or PP?

I would head out to pp and walk couple hundred yds to where you see some old holes ,good luck .fish the whole water column .

Just might be better off walking out from the main marina in town , i believe hyw 28 almost ends there.
Be sure you have some large minnows with those jigs.

minnows, smelts, doesn't matter, either/or, even a piece of squid i.e. rubber band like strip of squid has worked for me, just something with a bit of smell so if the fish hits it without biting it a little 'smell' is picked up by the fish and it will come back in and bite it, , if you get a hit and it doesn't stick, put the jig back in the same place, more than likely the fish will hit it again and stick the second time, you want to be using braided line as main line, and 2 or more feet of fluorocarbon for a leader to the jig/lure, using monofilament or other non braids as a main line will give you little or no chance to stick the hook in the fish's mouth before he has already bit and buggered off, an idea that came to me in the last few days is perhaps the best thing to do after a failed hookset, is to ever so slowly let the jig sink back down, even past where the depth of the first bite, so the jig acts as though it has been wounded by the first hit, kinda suspect lake trout slash at bait to stun it more than we believe and would expect to see a slowly sinking, wounded bait/jig after they have hit it once, making it an easier target the second time around, just an idea i wanna experiment with in the summer
