Had a young worker at cabelas in edmonton tell me I should put a 4x16 nikon on my 375 H&H, and I said that to much,we said we want to look at the zeiss duralyt 2-8x42 and he said we may aswell not put a scope on at all and he walked away.
The we said we wanted enough magnificent to shoot out to 300 yards he said that way to far for a 375 H&H, then my son asked him why he wanted us to put a 4x16 scope on then and we said he had another customer and quickly went in the back

I would have asked for the manager, and explained to him why I was taking my business elsewhere.Hopefully the idiot either gets sent packing or at least gets moved somewhere in the warehouse where he doesn't have any contact with customers.

He was also arguing with my son over the ballistics of the 375 H&H, he said the 375 H&H wouldnt be lethal out pass 300 yards

The person obviously knows nothing about ballistics or the 375 H&H in particular!

Overheard a guy at Cabelas tell of his shooting prowess. He was showing a guy a Rem 700 Tactical 308. Guy asked how accurate the gun was. Worker replied, "I don't want to brag, and don't measure yourself against me cuz I have a lot of experience, but when I shoot this puppy I regularly get 1/4" groups at 300 yards. My son, who is 12, and both shoots and reloads with me, turned and said, "Dad, that guy is a liar." We started laughing and walked away. Why bother spewing BS like that.
After walking away, I wondered if I had just seen Edmhunter in the flesh!

LOL.
I was I was at P&D the other day.. There was a fellow there getting a scope mounted that just loved to hear himself talk. I don't think the guy took a breath in at least half an hour. He was going on about how he shoots from 100-700 yards using his BDC reticle. The guy behind the desk asked what kind of groups he's getting at 700?
Customer: "oh about an inch"
Clerk: "really? An inch ?"
Customer: "oh yeah, all the time"
Clerk: "what kind of ammo are you using"
Customer: "... uh 180 gr"
Clerk: "180 grain what?"
Customer: "Winchester Springfield's"
Clerk: "Winchester Springfields...?"
Customer: "yep"
Clerk: "you mean a 30-06"
Customer: "yep"
Clerk: "what brand of ammo?"
Customer: "Winchester Springfield's"
Clerk:
Meanwhile the guy mounting the scope in the back comes around the counter and hands the guy his rifle. He goes on to show it off... "yeah this is my 30-06.. It's a Mauser action - that means it's really accurate. I busted the stock but it's okay cause I glued it all back together and re-stained it. I always try and shoot my deer between 4-700 yards."
I could never work behind a gun counter.. Seriously how do these people get dressed in the morning?

Even then, there is no such thing as a skeet, but the impression I got, was that he he intended to use a shotgun, and try and shoot clay targets in the air.

The other day I was at P&D. I was asking the sales man if I could take a look at the CZ 527 7.62x39mm. I was commenting about how nice it feels, and it shoots intermediate round. Then the old guy behind the counter gave a lecture, that 7.62x39mm is a full rifle round, not to be consider as a intermediate round.

This spring I was in a shop in town( now closed) and after I mentioned that I didn't like a rifle they had because it was in 270Winchester, another customer there told us he hates it too.
Apparently the fall before he hit a deer twice in the heart at 100 yards with a .270 and it got away, never did find it.
When I asked him how he knew they were heart shots if the deer ran away, he told me that when they hunch over like that one did it's a guaranteed heart shot.
"Oh, hunch up and take off, tail down?" I asked .
""YUP! EXACTLY!!"

I couldn't ask anymore questions, I have a hard time with guys like this and usually just nod and walk away!
Probably back behind the diaphragm somewhere though.

The fun over terminology must be so common it is contagious.
The other day an older outdoor store clerk walked me straight to the factory ammo shelf after I'd asked for bullets of a certain brand-construction-weight.
I should have asked for projectiles - but that's a big word.

It can be more than a little frustrating. Most customers are great to deal with, but there is small, yet significant, percentage that are either a) hard of hearing (not uncommon among shooters), b) ignorant to the point that I find it hard to believe they actually passed the firearms safety course, c) plain 'old stupid, or a mixture of all three.

To be honest, it kind of is. After asking "do you want loaded ammunition, or projectiles for reloading?" for the 52nd time that day, you have a tendency to start assuming... which usually never ends well.
For a majority of customers it appears that "bullets" = ammunition, "tips" = bullets, and the manufacturer of their rifle = the cartridge they are looking for; i.e. a Weatherby takes "Weatherby" irregardless of the actual cartridge it is chambered in.....
"I need 300 bullets."
Loaded ammunition, sir?
"Yeah" (slightly confused by the question)
What cartridge is it?
"300... aren't you listening?"
Okay, 300 what? 300 Win Mag? 300 Weatherby Mag, 300 WSM? 300 Ultra?
(slightly awkward pause)
"Weatherby.... it's a Weatherby rifle... does it matter?"
Then there are the requests for bases and rings.... don't even get me started.

I work at a gun counter and what you have just explained rings so true!!
Had a customer come in asking for 7mm ammo, i asked if it was 7 rem mag 7-08 or 7x57 or 7 mm weatherby, and he looks at me like I am some kind of space alien and replies 7mm
I had a guy buy a benelli semi auto in 300 win mag the other day and wanted a lazer sight for long range shooting.
I said that the lazer sight provides no magnification.
He replied but they are the best for long range! I just shut my mouth and gave him what he wanted.
I am definately not perfect. There are alot of people on this forum that know more about guns (especially shotguns and hand guns) then i know, but to work in retail you need a special kind of gift called patience.

Lmao and the rest/ all above ... I wish. 500 bucks just to start In powder and bullet miscalculations and trigger time while self teaching yourself to shoot. gets you 16" groups at 1000.
I luv this thread. Funniest ever
