If you want less recoil but more gun, get yourself a 7mm-08 in tc encore, its got a 28" tube (the tc single shot in a 28" tube has the same overall gun length as a bolt action in a 24" tube). With that extra barrel length I can surpass listed velocities for the 7 mm rem mag for 120 grain bullets.
What velocity is the encore producing?I was producing 3400fps to 3500fps with the 120gr ballistic tip in my 7mmremmags with 24" barrels.Nosler lists a 120gr load producing 3570fps for the 7mmremmag and another 120gr load at over 3560fps,both with 24" barrels.

With barnes ttsx 120 grains I max out at 3325 fps. All my barnes bullets have been shooting about 75-100 fps slower than my nosler bullets, which put me in at 3400 fps.

With your setup they wouldn't be surpassing the 7 mm rem mag, but looking at Hodgdon loads they do. A typical Hodgdon velocity for a 120 grain bullet is listed as max 3260 fps.

I dunno traps, think I'm gonna say BS on this one. I remember reading an artical on some experements done by law inforcement agenceys in the states. They found that they could cut down the barrels on their 308's to right around 21 inches with the velocity loss being negligeble. As well they found that going over 24" they actualy started to lose velocity, once the powder had burnt up the friction on the barrel actualy slowed the bullet.

I realise that this is all just hearsay and could be wrong but to be fair I sort of think thats where you got your info as well cause it sounds a little far fetched to me.

If they were actually losing velocity, what reason would firearms companies have to even make 308 win rifles with 26" barrels?A 30" barrel like the one at the link below would be pure stupidity.

My Nosler,Hornady, and Hodgdons manuals all list 120gr loads for the 7mmremmag at 3500fps or more.

That has not been my experience at all.In my rifles, the TSX and TTSX produce at least as much velocity as Nosler bullets.

If 21 was getting them that close to max valocity a 24 inch barrel on a 308 would be kinda stupid as well. They were using federal match grade amo, maby a round with slower burning powder would have performed differently.

Exactly why you shouldn't assume that a 26" or 28" barrel can't produce more velocity than a shorter barrel. You have no idea what powder he was using, and he wasn't even using a 308win.

The extra 4" of barrel won't make a 7mm-08 superior to a 7mmremmag,or even equal for that matter, but it certainly could add velocity to a 7mm-08.

Elkhunter, I checked the online Hodgdon manual, it lists no load over 3327 fps, my paperback Hodgdon manual is any where from 3260 fps to 3570 fps, and my Nosler is 3200-3536 fps using 24 inch barrels. Not too many loads over 3500 fps, three loads out of the 25 listed, not common for the range of powders used but definitely possible. The 7mm-08 in 28" can't compete with the info in hard copied manuals.

Cal, I used a chronograph with consistent results over five shots, to say the chronograph is entirely accurate is anybodies guess.

To add to that train of thought chrono results for the 338 Federal is typically 100 fps slower than touted by Federal. They list a Barnes 185 grain bullet at 2750 fps and a Nosler 210 grain at 2630. I am using a 200 grain Nosler E-tip and launching it at 2711 fps at 1 grain less than max. with a 28" tube. No losses on my end and the reason is the longer tube.

This reminds me of what an old shooter told me years ago when I expressed an interest in a 257 Weatherby...he said, "if you think you need a 257 Wtby just load 120's in your 7 Mag".......
