The velocity difference between the 6.5/06 and the 6.5/284 is so little it's not worth picking one over the other because of it.
If a person has something like a 788 action made for the shorter cartridge however, it is,however, it is.

9.3X62 just a thought!

- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

I have one of each. If I were just to one of the two and it was to be mainly a deer rifle with the occasional moose or bear, I'd go with the 6.5-06. If I was using mainly for moose and bear, I'd go with the 8-06.

But I was never very good at decisions so ..did em both both redundent of course considering the rifles that were already in the rack ...

I kinda like the 30.06 AI as well. I've had three of thoses, one that shot real nicely that I traded off for one that looked real purdy (Model 70 Winchesteer that was on the cover of the Winchester Custom Shop Catalogue way back in the early '60's..one of Red Hasey's rifles for those who knew him) but gave me a headache after 3 shots (Pendleton brake), and my current Remington which is a keeper.

Thanks for all input fellas. Think I'm swayed to the larger chambering as a show stopper for my son. Sorry for the bit of a derail Chuck.

Just curious...what does it cost to have work like the OP wants...done?

Not the barrel itself but the ream and the mounting of the barrel?

Also...where do folks go for their barrels?

Depends...just to rechambre, index (if you're using a take-off) and headspace...probably 250.00-300.00.

New bbl.........sky's the limit. Most custom shops and some distributors carry bbl blanks in 6.5 and even some take-offs.

Should be a nbr of 6.5/06 reamers out there in the hands of competent gun-plumbers, so you shouldn't need to buy a reamer.

I rented a 22 khornet reamer from this outfit a few years ago. I did not check if he had 6.5-06 but I would be shocked if he did not.

I'd guess he's popping blanks mostly these days. It would explain his frustration, which is likely due to the burden of shame he carries around as his Ol' lady makes it clear to him she has been unsatisfied for years.
He has turned to this to try and distract himself from the pain.......so sad.

Default ...or, go classic classy

I played with the idea of a 6.5-06 for years, got one half built on a 700 action, but the gunsmith died; sold the barrel to a buddy.

The classy that I refer to is the 256 Newton; just a tidge different from the mainstream, but one the very first true high velocity rounds.
