Larch (Tamarack) is the best. Burns hot, long, and clean. Get stuff that's been standing dead for 50+ years and it splits super easy, has no bark, and no sap at all. I work in forestry so it's easy to come by. Most people east of BC like birch, but not many people in BC burn hardwoods. Larch is the preferred around here.

I bought tamarack last year for my in door fireplace, used to burn birch before. Here is the scoop: birch burns with more fire, less crackles. Tamarack doesn’t burn as easy and doesn’t give you much of the actual flame if you like that factor. If you burn tamarack in a closed fire stove then it will probably give you more heat but if you are using it mostly for the ambiance- then go with birch.
