Haven't decided yet
My son started a new electrical apprenticeship with new company this morning adn is expecting their first child later this month so not likely he will have time off or inclination to come with me. Not sure I want to apply solo. Still thinking about pros and cons. Didn't fire a shot this fall except sighting in.
Elk steaks! hmmm???

It's a cull so they want maximum efficiency. Also due to the bareness of Suffield trying to get in bow range while 100's of guys cruise around in their trucks might be a wee bit tough.

So what's your best guess on how many applicants they get?
Even though it's a long way for us to go we put our applications in. Harrison asks me "What if we get all 6 tags?". "Ummmm...... we get lots of meat?" Guess we'd be supplying lots of friends with elk (if we were succesful).
I'm guessing a few thousand apps so chances should be about 1 in 12, 1 in 8 at best. 1 in 1728 to 1 in 512 of getting all 3 drawn.
We have no moose or elk in the freezer, some deer though.

if they wanted that they shouldn't have handed out so many tags per person.
if my partner or i tag out we're going to be done with one that we'll split. i just can't shoot them for the sake of shooting them personal preference i guess

Then don't apply and let someone else who will shoot 2 cows apply or give the extra meat to a needy family.
They are handing out 2 tags because they can harvest double the amount of animals with the same number of people on the base. This is a cull hunt and the more us hunters can cull the better. If we don't do are job the helicopter is standing standby.

If you get end up with 4 tags and only want one I'm sure I could find a home for the extra. Just let me know.

if i get drawn i'll see if someone would like some meat. expect a pm in that case. but i wont let it waste in my freezer just because it's a cull.
i'd rather they shot it from a helicopter and the yotes ate it than i ruin the meat.
and again because we're going off track good luck to everyone!
p.s. when is everyone applying for? i went for the first hunt because that's when i was available but i'm thinking i want to be the first one to scatter them too lol

Assuming you can only apply for one of the two weeks? I.e. If not drawn for week 1 then still have a chance in week 2.

Not when all the 2nd week hunts are gone because that's all some hunters picked for their priority.

Good point.
I just applied for week 1, only time off work I could get.
But my draw % may have just dropped by 50% ?

If you draw for the same hunt as myself and my hunting partner, we would be happy to have you join us while hunting. More hands are always better for taking care of larger animals, especially for us older fellows.

In and done. Just waiting to see if I am lucky enough to be drawn for a tag. Would be a long drive for me though.........twenty minutes from home!

Do they require the elk to be taken away whole? Or can the elk be quartered "gutless" and remains left on base??
Another q not answered. Average wait time for the head to be tested? Thanks.

Nine hours on the road for me, but living in Fort McMurray, I never hunt within five hours of home.

Suffeild cull
I'm in, it's a long haul from Edmonton but only an hour from my daughters house! If my previous elk hunting success is any indication, I will probably be the only guy there to not see any! Lol.Fingers crossed.

You can do gutless. But they really prefer if everyone is off the base by 6pm. There was an instance I believe where range control was searching for a pair of guys and found them at 10pm boning out an elk. They say if you will be out past 6pm to phone range control and let them know what's going on.
