175gr NP.......3100fps ...IMR 7828ssc ... I have some room to grow here ... I think this is the powder they used when the 7rem first came out and factory loads were hitting 3100ish before they dialed them back
160grNP.........3200 fps ... RL22 ... maxed out for my rifle
140gr ttsx......3325fps ...IMR 4350 / RL22
139gr lrx.........3325fps ... IMR 4350 / RL22
all these loads shoot very close to half moa +/- .3 depending upon me for 5 shot groups

You are publishing speeds that are above max published loads for my 7 RUM with a 26" barrel, which is the hottest of the 7 mags, and FAR above what I would try to get out of my 7 Rem Mags with any length barrel. You can do what you want but I STRONGLY suggest no one else tries to match these velocities. You are so far over pressure it isn't even funny. Some of those speeds wiil be running close to 90,000 PSI if you run them through Quickload and that is far over even a European proof load round which is 77,958 PSI and they only fire it once.

And barrel wear is the least of their worries at that pressure.

What did I predict about hot rodders?
Some of the reloading practices some guys do, makes one wonder........

This is why I own two of these rifles, one with iron sights and one with a scope.

No kidding.
I’m getting 3300 with a 120gr and that’s on the edge of ejector marks and a harder bolt lift.

Exactly! The rifle is against your head if something decides to let go due to metal fatigue.

Bob Hagel and Warren Page had the 7MM Magnums figured out in the 50’s. A 175 grain bullet at 3000 FPS is a hammer. Remington opted for a smaller case. It did and does sell like hot cakes, but they had a chance to make it better IMO. Less body taper, a 30 degree shoulder, and the longer neck of the Mashburn with a scosh more case capacity is the cartridge the 7MM Remington Magnum should have been.

Anyway. I like my 7mm RM, and I seem to get very good results with a 150 gr TTSX. It's getting pushed fast enough to get good expansion, and tough enough that I haven't ever recovered a bullet, as they are passing through. Everything was dead in a hurry that I shot with it.
Do you need to change from your -06? No. Should you? Well....do you want to? The only edge your -06 has is pushing a heavier bullet if you want to go that route. Realistically, they will both put game in your freezer, and inside that 400 yards you are shooting, I doubt anything you hit will be able to tell the difference.

I don’t NEED to change from my 06, I really like the rifle and enjoy hunting with it. The issue is my hunting style has evolved over the years and it’s not a rifle I want to be trudging through the sun/rain/sleet/snow god forsaken country elk tend to live in! I inherited the rifle from my Grandfather when he passed nearly 20 years ago and have hunted with it ever since. I treasure the rifle too much to continue to beat it up so I’d like a different rifle for those tougher hunts. I’ll still use the 06 from time to time, it’ll just be babied a bit more! Although I have nothing but praise for the 06 cartridge I want something different to tool around with.

I appreciate that, I have my grandfather's old Stevens side by side 12....so, it sounds like you need another rifle. And a 7mm Remington Magnum is a fine cartridge and there are lots of fine rifles to chose from. Get a nice rifle that fits, and a good scope that you like, and Hunt. That is all.

A 30-06 with a 24" barrel will push a 165 gr. Spitzer to 2950 MV with 57-58 gr of IMR 4350, wich would be at least 100% case capacity. A 7RM will do the same but will need 62-63 gr. which is "almost "100% case capacity.
7mm bullets have a little advantage ballistically. So why not go 280 Rem. instead?

The only thing that's not comparable is a semi-auto vs a boltgun.

The 280 does intrigue me but the rifle I was eyeing up is chambered in 7mm

I can now add one more for you to think about. Since my last post I've aquired the nearly holy grail of speed in 30 cal vs 7mm. I got a 300 rum I've just tried it on a moose and all l I can say is its louder faster more recoil and still makes em dead (back to shot placement and ability) Asked around to some of the guys passing thru here going north to hunt and one guy had a 30-378 he could hardly wait to show me. The guy's on his group said pretty much if he could see it it would do the job! So there's some food for thought, maybe you could just jump in all crazy like and go with the weatherby 30-378 but I'll bet the cost of shooting will certainly be a deterrent (it just looked expensive to shoot) I would think barrel life might not be very good either. 3420 fps from 180 grn makes me think kinda hot on the barrel.

He probably can, while producing 80,000psi.

I'm sure you certainly can, and I'll also bet that "the real gunsmith " has never fired those loads through a pressure gun!

The Real Gunsmith guy also says that the 6.5 creed ore is nothing more than a 600 yard target round.
While I agree that 6.5CM is just another round, it is a decent hunting round, and has proven to be effective for accuracy at distances over 1000.
I’m not wild on him. He just seems to be one of those crusty, grumpy grandpas with a “back in my day” attitude. Obviously a vast combination of knowledge and opinion, but I think the opinion sometimes is just to great. Maybe fear of the unknown compared to what he does know?

It's interesting that you mention stepping up to a larger cartridge altogether, the other rifle I am considering is a 338 Win Mag. I might have a closer look and give this round a try for Elk and Moose. Seems the 7mm might be too close to the 06 for me to notice a significant difference.
I'll have deer hunts covered with my 257 Roberts AI or 300 Sav.!
