Couple weeks ago we found a weed bed at Newell and I kid you not we pulled pike out every second cast with big red and white Len Thompson spoons, the biggest one we pulled out was 30 pounds. However I have got lots of pike between 30 and 40lbs at twin valley

Wayne what a great fish and photo. A fish that big does not need to be held at arms length towards the camera.

Beauty pike sir!!
Are you talking twin vally by Nanton?
I heard that lake had a complete kill last year, anyone confirm ?
Not because it's shallow but because of water quality?
I know by mid summer its choked with grass clipping bloom.

My best is 29.5 lbs on the fly, just about everyone of my buddies has broken 30lbs on the fly. One in particular had a 54" pike that he caught about 10plus years back, pic used to hang in country pleasures fly shop. We guess wieght was in high 30s maybe even 40. Thick as heck.

Yea by nanton, I haven't gotten much in the summer months. But on our family friends property(where I always have ice fished) we catch good ones in late December. Not much else in the summer months though. As far as I'm aware there are some still swimming around

Sadly our Res. are managed for walleye when we could have world class pike fisheries.

There are some really big ones just below Bassano Dam. I have caught, and saw others catch, quite a few likely over 20 lbs there.

That was 20+ years ago when I lived in Calgary.

we have some pretty amazing pike fisheries, people are too busy chasing walleyes to find them I can name quite a few lakes I would bet big money, (if I had money) that would have record breakers in them. plus people would rather spend the day drilling hole after hole than just setting up and quietly waiting for the big ones. only thing augers and noise attracts is small pike, the big girls didnt get that way by being dumb

I agree with you 100%.

It might be boring to sit and soak a giant dead bait on good structure and transitions - but she will arrive eventually.

Seems to be the way every big pike is caught for us through the ice.

22 pounds out of Newell. The same day I had one that made my 22 pounder look small that kept following my hooks in for about 1/2 hour, but after trying every technique and lure I had with me, I could not get the log to bite. Seen multiple 30+ pounders pulled out of Newell, but I have never gotten one more than a 22 pounder.
