Agree, 100%. Seems like a lots of folks maybe just “checked off” the hunter training endorsement question.

I'm thinking a lot of these hybrid threads are from new hunters to the province who did just check off the box but, they come from areas that Mule Deer are not present so they're hoping they shot a deer that they had a tag for. or at least a "hybrid"

^^ This. I was out with a fellow (new to hunting) that shot a MD deer and put his tag on it. I have no idea why I checked the tag but he had put his whitetail tag on the deer. I told him that he used the wrong tag and he needed to re-tag the deer. He was adamant that the white ass and small white tail with a black tip made that deer a white tail. End result he used two tags.

Many years ago when we still had the steel tags around the antler I had used a felt pen and wrote a M on the mule deer tag and a W on the whitetail. I shot a whitetail buck and put my W tag on it but I guess when you turn it over it was an M. I immediately put the proper tag on it and took the head to the fish cops and showed him what I had done. I was issued another tag.
As for hybrids I have saw a whitetail and mule buck fighting over some mule does so I would imagine it happens but I have never seen one.

Only basing it on the big browtines and the whitetail throat patch, sure looks like a whitetail so far.

100 percent white tail, just has a darker cape. Ears, horns and face are all white tail to me.

Not hard to tell 100% what that deer is from all the pics you have given......should take a matter of about 4 seconds to see that

I wonder how many hybrids we oldtimers have seen and identified as pure Whitetail or pure Mule Deer. Would we even know? I doubt it.
I know this from farm life. The offspring of a mixed mating can look like either parent or like something entirely different.
And even someone with a lot of experience with mixed breeds often can't be sure without a paper trail or scientific analysis.
I don't think it unreasonable to question an unusual specimen nor do I think it is proof of failure to properly identify said animal.
It seems to me to be hypocritical to jump to the defense of questionable hunting practices not expressly forbidden in law and to then jump on someone for having second thoughts about an animal that was initially correctly identified.
I see nothing in the regulations or in the wildlife act that says one can never have doubts about their identification of a harvested animal or bird.
Clearly hybrids exist. Why wouldn't someone wonder if an unusual specimen might be a hybrid?
I am more concerned with those who think they can be 100 correct in their identification with nothing more to go on then a grainy photo on a web page.
I could see one of those experts shooting a horse thinking it's a Moose.

If I wondered if I shot a hybrid I would contact the local fish and Wilflife Biologist and get the DNA tested .That is the only way to tell fir sure

LOL Yeah,
For sure I wouldn't be asking here.
In truth, if I was convinced it would pass as the species I had a tag for I wouldn't bother to ask anyone. Unless it were a real unusual specimen.
To me, it wouldn't matter so long as I was legal and providing it would never make front page news.
If however, I thought it would make front page news, I might want to share it as a conversation starter.

Yup take a look at the tail then make a decision .
Whether or not it later tested as a true hybrid or not would make no difference to me as it was legally tagged as per the tail that the deer wore but if it did turn out to be a true hybrid it certainly would make good conversation

After looking at the pic for about 2 seconds it looks 100% Whitetail to me. Seeing these hybrid threads makes me shake my head. Do people spend any time at all watching wildlife other than the day they drive out to kill one? Watch a herd of deer through a spotting scope, you will see different colourations on individual deer. Deer identification is not that difficult, really it’s not.

I have lived on a farm over 25 years and hunted 21 years. This is just a totally different type of hair. My grandpa hunted for over 50 years and he agrees with me that it’s a hybrid and so does a taxidermist of 40 or more years.

I have hunted for over 45 years myself, and I wouldn't be foolish enough to call it a hybrid because of the hair. I am not a biologist, but I do know that the glands are the best way for a hunter to determine whether it is a hybrid or not. As to which tag to use, F&W go by the tail/rump.

The taxidermist I’m talking about was also a guide. As for grandpa, he’s been involved in hunting his entire life (80 years)

Are either your grandfather or the taxidermist a biologist? Unless they are their opinion is not worth any more than the opinion of any other experienced hunter/taxidermist.

If you are wondering, get a DNA test done , that will end all speculation .
