The vast majority of truck drivers have never used chains, and probably don't know how,
driver-less trucks will just wait for the driver-less plow or sand truck.

There will always be a need for very specialized and qualified drivers,
but even they will be driving machinery capable of autonomous on road operation.

It will not be long before most or all on pavement driving of trucks (and taxis) will be done by driver-less vehicles.
Humans may be forbidden to drive on many/most roads, as they will be the most dangerous and unpredictable factor in road system operation.
I suspect that day is closer than we are prepared for.

Good Luck, YMMV.

That is quite a way off yet. Have to develop the integration into infrastructure for it yet and secure wifi for it. May see it the next decade on pilot programs in a city, but other than that, it is a long way from practical applications yet.
And of course the other question is, how and who to fund it. That should take another 10 or 20 yrs to implement. Just imagine the fun that malicious hackers or terrorists can have with a system like that to play with.

Yup,500 rpm under.Pops right in.
For the new guy... don`t even think about logging trucks. You will die.
If you don`t believe me then go out in the summer and drive the haul roads with a 4x4 and imagine what it`s like in the dead of winter coming off a mountain with a bridge and a 90 degree at the bottom ....full loaded.Chained to the balls and still can`t hold it.Don`t wear a seat belt.

It sounds good to say you never do this and only do that but the reality is that a good driver can adapt to each situation and deal with it as needed.

It was not that long ago that people said the same thing about other world changing technologies.

Even the President of IBM said he could only foresee a worldwide need for fewer than a dozen computers,
and Bill Gates said that the Internet would not be commonly used by individuals.

Exponential growth accelerates far faster than most people can conceive.
This is often illustrated by 'the wheat and chessboard' example.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_...sboard_problem

Moore's law (computing power and capability DOUBLES every 18 months) has been demonstrated to be surprisingly accurate and consistent and depending on what is recognized as the start of the computer era,
(I favor ENIAC calculating ballistic performance in 1944,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENIAC
but others suggest the statistical recognition that computers should be classified as distinct from business machines and typewriters (remember those?) in 1957),
we are now on square 40 or 49 and certainly in the '2nd half of the chessboard' where 'things get very interesting' and 'unpredictable'.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_...the_chessboard

Good Luck, YMMV.

That's what the jake is for. I've never used the clutch, but always shift with the jake

you WILL prematurely wear out the transmission, and will not be covered under warranty because they can tell if the truck was floated or not.

Nor am I, but learned to drive corral cleaning when I was 18. Teaches you pretty quick to shift when heavy and its soft

Agreed. I mostly shift without the clutch but when in soft ground, going up a steep grade, whatever, I will use the clutch to get it out of gear a lot of the time. Never could get the hang of that jake shifting and mostly shake my head when those guys speed shift six times pulling away from the fuel pumps ... braaapp ... braapp... give it a rest. That's why towns and cities make laws against them. Gives us all a bad name

Most jakes are pretty quiet these days unless you are a super trucker that specifically gets a really noisy one.
And yeah, I blast through the gears also. Thats why I like using the clutch and the jake. I haven't broken a tranny yet.

Engine retarder brake. Its a switch on the dash with three settings. Its uses the engine to slow down the truck instead of the actual brakes.

Sometimes with three settings, more often than not just on/off.

My style of driving has me leaving it on all the time, usually on the high setting, but someone showed me that my upshifted might be smoother sometimes with the jake off.
I'm always learning and thats a good thing.

Either am I but I don't split often except with a heavy load or up hill.
Effectively an eight speed. Lol.
