I saw another melanistic bird this morning, but I was carrying the 28 gauge again, and it ran and flushed just out of range. Tomorrow, I will be carrying the 16 gauge, in case I need an extra 10 yards.

I don't care if rooster's born wild or released, especially when it acts like a wild bird and you only find out it was a released bird after you shoot it .
However yes they are taking hold in the area I hunt .

Now THAT is interesting.....!

I pushed up one of these melanistic birds today but too far out. It flushed a bit wild but could be it didn't like the bell on my dog (or perhaps I was lagging a bit far behind). It took off and flew a long ways. Would have been nice...

I had two new pheasant hunters out, and I was hoping for another melanistic bird, and my dog found another one.

That would make my little yellow lab the Sharon Stone (or maybe it's Kathy Bates)of the Lab world. We bumped one at 60 and I let him go and marked it down 1/4 mile across a hay field. She cornered him in minutes and locked eyes. Wouldn't flush. At some point he blinked cause she nailed him. He must not have read your post lol.
Big bird though.

We've had to normal males hanging out in our yard all summer and into the fall.
I've plenty of good photos of them but now I want some of those Malamute birds.

Well, there IS the exception to every rule of thumb!

Great job on the melanistic pheasants. I’ve put on 30+km this week and still haven’t seen one. Maybe today or tomorrow. Beautiful birds that’s for sure and interesting to hear about them being a bit tougher and gnarlier.
Did anyone see that big covey of Hungarian Partridge at Capital Power this week? That was very unexpected. I wonder if they were released or not? Seems very coincidental that they would have just been there. Took me completely by surprise.

They were released. Saw a blip on social media about it from ACA.
