Question for all you drone guys. After watching that you tube clip with all the fails, my question is .... do drones float?
Couple of those crashes occured in water, and I was wondering if owner can retrieve crashed drone from, say, a lake. Seems like a bit of money to have sitting at bottom of a lake.

From Kentucky
Here's what the drone owner says about the incident.

Most UAV's don't float, but there are a few amphibious models coming out. Typically, once a UAV is submerged, motors, ESC(electronic speed controller), and other components need to be replaced; not a cheap repair.

Re these ...Quadcopters , quadrotors ,drones , cool toys ....whatever one wants to call them.
I think as the arguments that have gone on during this thread prove , there will always be multi opinions on any given subject .

I think that they are a lot like firearms , in the way that it is not the gun or drone ( shortest spelling , so I'll call them drones ) , that is the problem , it is more the mindset of the brain that controls the hands that use them , is the problem.

That being said , I think that to not admit that there is the " potential " of the possibility that these "drones " could be used in some nefarious fashion ( maybe not today , but perhaps tomorrow ) considering how fast the technology is going forward etc, would be wrong .

And of course the other side of that , is to admit that the odds of that are perhaps small , against the amount of these drones what would be used for positive uses .

I think that the point missed or not spoken of , with the difference between these "drones " and the RC craft in the past , or more so what is making them fun/dangerous , is the camera .

If these flying machines were not able to carry a camera ( with real time images ) to the operator , I don't believe that they would be nearly as popular .

There have been commercials and general talk of all the cool things one can do ( delivering beer/pizza or Amazon stuff ) to name a few , and of course a large amount of other ways to use this tech ( good/bad ) , I'm sure of one thing ......

And that is that the powers that be , are certainly going to have to get a handle on these ( regs and rules ) sooner than later , as I'm sure we are only at the early stages of could be a very large problem ( maybe that should read ... Annoyance ) in our lives .

When I say problem , I'm not just taking about potential bad use but more on the line of " stupid "use , as clearly our society has proven daily , " There is no running out of Stupid " .

How soon will it be before accidents happen as these things are crashing and falling out of the sky as people realize that this could be a new ( better ) way to take a " Selfie " .

...how soon does APPLE make a wee little one that you control from you Apple watch , gee , you'll be able to buzz around the office and annoy your fellow workers ( and then get fired ) and they thought surfing the web on company time was a problem

Some how , at the rate technology is racing forward , maybe it won't be that long . that the line " I"LL BE BACK " will have a new understanding "

But no question , I would love to own one of these .... one could drive to the mountains , find your self a nice quite little spot , and check out all the wonderful sited and views , without ever having to leave your lawn chair or being worried about bears.

Its definitely a fast growing technology.

I like the fact that these UAV's or drones are being used for shark patrols on beaches.
Australia is going to have them fully implemented by next year.

And some want to use them for poacher patrol in Africa but special permits are required.

Alot of good uses for sure.

Guess we'll just have to wait n see about their negative uses

Another drone incident at JFK airport flying into restricted airspace.

Feds issuing stricter regulations.

Its becoming a concern...and now homeland security has more to do.
As if they're not busy enough.

I get the practical and recreational applications......but now the lunatics are taking this toy and using it as a monkey wrench.

I know I know......no big deal and its like any other problem

re: lilycam

This capability is already available today at your local London Drugs.
Solo by 3DR is already capable of following you as you walk, kayak, motorbike, etc. $1200 gets you up and running..
Very cool technology getting implemented in this model. Tethering, walls and the following-you aspect.

Selfie sticks are going to go the way of the Bissel sweeper. Everyone had one.

a person is aware of a flying camera, they're unaware of one in a button. privacy does matter. I thought privacy was one of the major concerns regarding drones.

though the button camera would capture far more candid behaviour then a flying one.

I'll be modifying my drone with a button camera lense for a wider field of view when it shows up in the mail.

Better?

I have 2 DGI Phantoms and love them, take them on vacation all the time and use them all over... as long as u respect air space by airports you are fine. I see no fun in flying in residential areas so avoid people thinking you creaping on them even though u cant zoom with the camera( Go Pro on one, and phantom camera on other)

Just don't be an ass and you wont have any issues with them

Had one of those things hovering over my house/yard on our acreage back in June. At the time we had a 50 friends over. It actually kind of **** me off! Shooting it down definitely crossed my mind. Haven't seen it since.

I was planning to take the drone operators course before I switched companies. I hope it is still something I'll get to do in the future.

Drones are one of the best things that have happened in my industry. I can take a GPX file of a proposed pipeline route and have the drone fly it with a GoPro for scouting purposes. This is a huge cost reduction over flying the proposed line in a helicopter, and it is ultimately more productive.

Two thumbs way up for the responsible use of this technology.

I have a great career for getting to play with cool toys.

That's cool D/A. and we are starting to see drones being used for remote sensing too...another very cool application. We are going to see a real explosion in the realm of 'big data' when it comes to GIS/Remote Sensing/Drones/Imagery/Surveying/etc.

My son just won a go-pro hero 4 black and all kinds of acceseraries. Might be a good time for me to buy one of those drones. Approx how much does a decent one cost? Middle of the price range one.
