As for the Alberta record the same conditions probably were in place for that fish to grow over 12 pounds. Those conditions are, stocked in a lake with no spawning areas,no competition for forage. Indeed all these stocked lakes do is grow forage in the absence of fish. Just look at that huge Brookie taken out of Barbe lake Manitoba in 06. Once the forage gets knocked back the conditions to grow huge fish in these bodies of water no longer exist. Since there is no recruitment of trout once the trout die off all you need to do is wait 6 or 7 years for the forage to rebound and you can grow big Brookis al over again.Oh yeah the forage has to include a dense minnow population. Remember the trout are stocked at a size to prey on them at once.
Does Maligne not have places for brook trout to spawn?

Default Alberta brook trout record

Maligne lake must have only limited spawning grounds available for the size of the lake. The same reason those Idaho lakes grow big pike, low density of fish. Is Maligne Lake somewhere you would go to catch 20 or 30 brook trout a day? Also it was stocked with Nipigon strain brookies, the biggest in the world.

So does that mean that 10lbs tippet and line class world record brookies is still wide open?

I just noticed on both those lists that there isn't a 5kg (10lbs) record.

for some reason they dont have a 10lb line class. these are the only lineclass or tippet records available in igfa. if you are using 8lb line they will bump it up to the 12lb line, if you line break tests over the 8lb mark that is.

Best thing to do Nathan is to ship your tippet material (multiple samples, the ones you want to persue, one sample of each) and your scale. Get all certified. Annual membership is cheap, also gets you a savings. If any of your tippet samples fail the pull tests and you need to persue that class, buy another brand and ship another sample. Nothing more than 2 oz increment scale, if it passes you are golden. After that just gotta giver and find a super sloth that fits the Npauls record persuit program, and get it to bite! Take a look at the record book, members only. All tackle anyone has access to, but check out the tippet classes. You will be surprised and potentially busy for a while if ya find something that looks juicy enough to get ya in gear. There arent many that look open, but there are a couple

I will stick to just chasing any fish I can and trying to catch some big fatties.

I don't need all this paperwork to know that I caught a pig.

There thousands of Brookies in Maligne. If you read the thread carefully enough I said that the big fish caught there was likely a coaster and thus it's size.
