Here is how an engineer bud of mine who builds ice roads explained it
Once a lake or body of water is fully covered with a sheet of ice, the fastest the ice can grow is 1 inch every 24 hours. And that is 24 hours of continuous below zero temp.
It also changes if there is snow cover or it snows during the freezing we all know snow acts like an insulation.
So because we are having a nice cold spell we should be cooling our heels for just a bit more.
SAFETY FIRST. No fish is worth your life.

Was at Cloutts today by Medicine Hat. Found one weak spot (maybe 2'') but the rest was good ice at about 5-6''.
Any been out on the lakes by Bow Island yet (ie. Grassy)?
Wondering if it's worth the drive tomorrow.

Travers
Between 7-9" on the northeast end, north of the spill way. Was roughly 100ft from shore. Fishing anywhere from 7-13' FOW. Good hard ice. Haven't checked thickness at the park yet but guys were fishing there yesterday. I would assume the park would be around the same thickness if you're fishing north of the pillars, seeing how it was iced up before the northeast end was. Stay safe out there folks!

I've really got to stop checking this thread. I'm stuck working out of town until mid december and these updates are making me ice crazy.....
Good luck and stay safe everyone, these ice reports are nice to know but test the thickness yourself and often.

Where abouts were you? We were on the west end of the dam in the red tent. Only saw one pike and the guys beside us caught a few small pike and a decent burb. Didn't see one whitefish go by. The CO officer at the end of the day told us that last weekend one group caught 11 whites.
I was not expecting the ice to be that thick already. Wonder if we missed the whites already....

Play safe.

I'm not AK47 (sorry for a confusing username), I think I left just before you - was in a black tent a bit east of you. Saw a lot of whites on the camera when I moved deeper, but they had no interest in anything I tried. 3 small pikes (not keepers), iced 2 burbots (lost one more at the hole). Talked with CO officer when he stopped me he didn't mention 11 whites, was it on the other lake? He said he was on Travers too.
PS Burbots are fun to watch on the camera

How much deeper and where they near the bottom? I put the camera down in about 12 FOW and only saw a muddy bottom no life.
The CO said that the previous weekend at MacGregor was when one group caught the 11.
I'm hoping they are still around in two weeks, I'm stuck in Ottawa and won't be able to get back to MacGregor

Early morning I saw some whites near the rocks then they went away. Moved to ~10-12 FOW (had a bite on a smelt rod there) flat sand/mud bottom, but had to raise the camera ~ 1/3-1/2 way up to see whites. I think I saw over a hundred of them in small schools every few minutes. They paid absolutely no attention to "cicadas", these other funny 4 hook spoons that I can't pronounce, wireworms, wireworms with "flasher", in different colors.
Only saw small pikes near the bottom there.

We were around the mid part of the dam - but we stayed only around until 1pm. We had few hits in the early morning - 2 whitefish ended up on ice and then later we got 1 burbot and numerous small pike. I know usually late evening is when whites are getting way more active but we could not stay any longer. From my experience sunny days like last Sunday is not good for whites, they move deeper and only come close to dam late in the evening and very early in the morning.

skeleton lake
edmonton area has more snow than the Boyle area. About 10 days ago the middle was open due to what snow had fallen but it is now fully covered... maybe only a couple of inches. I wouldn't be venturing on there for a while yet.

As of tuesday Keho had 5-6 inches in the inlet canal, might be less now with warm daytime temperatures. Fishing was great, caught lots of pike by jigging a smelt off the bottom.
