Congrats, man! And to your boy! You guys are sure doing it right!
Now for yours. With an axe. I don’t think you can beat the kids though.

Haha, they are lucky, but they have put in a lot of days. If there is a secret to killing bears that I have found it is time. I spend 20 days or more sometimes a year hunting them. I don’t use calls, scents, or anything other than boot leather, time, and watching the wind.
For the details. Without giving out secrets, we were hitting a couple of spots I knew there were bears in. I made a point of taking advantage of the fresh snow late last week so I knew where big footed bears were feeding. That is no guarantee, but it’s at least a start. As soon as the sun comes out after a gloomy few days you need to be there (that is a secret) so I took Ryan out of school and we went. Early. We were there all day and we just kept hitting those spots being careful of the wind.
At 5 ish he was there and we got within 30 yards behind on old snag of tree. I told him to let me see his head first (I knew he was a black bear, but just like confirmation). When that happened I gave him the green light. He was in scrub brush and pretty obscured so I was nervous about that. But I let him do his thing. He shot him when the opportunity presented itself and the bear bailed over a hill. We heard him crash, gave him five minutes and followed. We found him piled up in a horrible snag. It’s all we could do to get him 15’ uphill for pictures. :-)
Then the skinning in that hole. Oh my back. lol.

Nice job knocking them down. I hope your dad let you skin them also from start to finish .
Dark brown bears are very hard to find normally . Do you see a lot in your area you hunt them in ?

For these two bears the kids were hands to help hold. One was skinned in the dark, and both required enough of a pack out that I didn’t want to be all night. One ended up being a 1 am arrival home as it was.
We have quite a few colour phase bears here. But dark brown isn’t exactly common. I’ve been in on two. One me and my bear hunting partner and this one. Both beautiful bears. I’ve killed a few cinnamon’s, several blacks, a light brown one, I think just one and have seen some blonde fase, and a couple with cinnamon bodies and black head and legs. I also have seen a blonde with black legs and head. That one haunts me still. He was big but I literally had a bear already in my pack.
Dark brown and black seem to have the nicest hides. And bigger bears tend to be the darkest. I did kill a big cinnamon with a glossy coat that was a beauty also.

Starting your kids with a Kimber Montana in .308…. How are they supposed to go through the fun of buying/selling/building the perfect rifle now??
There’s fancier, faster, etc. but not much to improve upon there.
Nice work all around.

Awesome work. Thanks for sharing. This thread is positive and refreshing. Thing of beauty for bear "nuts" such as myself. Keep it coming. Good luck everyone. Take a kid out.

Thanks for sharing, great bear!
I was out last weekend but didn't have much success. A lot of smoke too... Just picked up a barrel and am going to try baiting this weekend for the first time.

My oldest son got his first bear last Saturday. Went out with a good friend and closed the deal.
Hams are in the freezer and hide is at the tanners!
Proud poppa here.

Tanners
Along the lines of bear hunting, where are the best options for getting a bear hide tanned in AB? I’ve harvested a few bears in the last few years but up north off a friends farm that were nuisance bears so we only kept the hides that were really nice. I’m close to Calgary so the hunting is more hiking but if I get a spot and stalk bear this spring what are the best options for a tanned hide? Looking mainly at cheap tanning, if I stumbled onto a real trophy I’d look at a nice bear rug but for a small meat bear I just want cheap compliance with our rules about hides.
I’m hoping to get out for a walk with the bow or rifle in the next week or so since I just got home from work.

Cheapest option is to tan it yourself, I’ll start doing that this year unless it’s a giant bear or nice colour phase. Tanning solution, space and time and some other odds and end are all you need.

Family friend thru ringette. Great man real beauty of a guy. Wanted to try some bear meat. So off we go for a sit. I was gonna top baits but low and behold already a bear on. So he settled his late Dads .308 on the shooting stick with his Old mans hand loads and after 25 minutes this boar finally gave up the vitals.
60 yard shot and a 34 yd recovery.
Backstraps to kick off bear camp.
Poplars are budding.
Get out there ppl!!!!

there might be a few AO members that take them for free, tan them and make gloves, slippers etc, that's my plan if I can connect the bowtech with a meat bear this weekend
