Went to Carson today, fishing on the campground side of the peninsula, 14 inches in all 6 holes we drilled. Half dozen trucks on the ice on the seawall side, nobody was out overly far though

Pigeon Lake?
We are going to be heading out Monday, possibly fishing south end of lake by Crystal Springs. Any recent reports would be greatly appreciated folks!

McGregor Lake yesterday, on average 7-8 inches for the holes I drilled axcept for when i was spooked in a section that punched through at about 3.5-4 inches. It was a large football field size section. Very dark clear ice, but alot thinner than everything around it.
Be careful out there.
We had ATV's on ice.

Yesterday at the south end 10 inches more or less. Ice was covered in snow. I went there at the end off the day and everybody that was leaving told me they didn't catch anything.

Pigeon Lake
Be careful driving onto Pigeon Lake at Mulhurst. I was out checking ice depth yesterday and found 13” (measured with Jiffy Ice Scout) on both sides of crack and up to 13.5” a bit farther out. Problem is that straight out from launch, it looked very thin like someone fell through…13” and a foot right was 4.5” and a foot right of that was 1.5”. The bad area looked about 5ft wide along crack and towards launch about 4 ft. I found a stick and put it in hole with flag tape. I followed crack a couple hundred yds towards the point and was 13” either side but in crack was only 4-5” in places and was split open about 6” most places. It looks like people have been crossing to the right of the bad spot but is about an 8-10” drop back to the ice. To the left, someone has opened up an access through the heave with 13” on both sides but the crack is 4.5-5” only. Be careful going on the ice at Mulhurst…straight on could take you into the weak spot.

Thanks Fishhawk! That's pretty surprising! We were just walking on by Chrystal Springs Area but hearing about this fluctuation in thicknesses, I dunno know. Probably head to Buffalo then...

Out at what I like to call "Deep South Newell" tonight and we fished a solid 6-8" of black ice, but 100yds to the east of us is wide open water. There were actually waves when we drove in. There are currently about 500 geese honking away and loving the open water. There are also at least two different packs of coyotes howling at the geese. Crazy times. Biggest walleye was just shy of 25" (a PB for me on this particular reservoir) and an absolute flurry of activity between 2-6pm then everything just died right off. We're all set up in the tent for the night and we'll see what the morning brings!

Fishing Pigeon and it was okay to get on a Mulhurst in the morning but challenging getting off at the end of the day. The ice break in front dropped a foot in a half to the bottom. Didn't want to get hung up so head down past the 2nd ice skating ring to the West and the come in my shore if you want to avoid the heave.
Ice was 10-12 but close to 12 everywhere I went. The exception was some of the large cracks that separated that you could clearly see. Drilled one of these which was just wide enough for the auger and found 6 inches. There is the good reason to cross those with some though and locating spots where it is not wide.

Battle Lake
Was out at Battle this weekend and there was a good solid 13 inches of ice wherever I was. Took the quad on at the park and drove to the point at the 4-H centre and all the way east to the end. Met some nice young gentleman that camped on the ice.Its great to see them enjoying the sport as much as I do. My goal was to land one of those big walleye that live out there but I never caught one of any size. Can’t find em in winter for some reason but do well in summer. Had a great couple days otherwise.

A friend was at ghost lake a while ago and had a family drive out on the ice. They warned them that they shouldn't be out there. But the family wasn't too concerned. They were driving around near the dam, pulling the kids in a sled. One guy said he couldn't watch anymore and packed up and left.

Winter isn’t the same as summer for walleye on any lake but location is still the most important thing. I don’t think the point by the 4 h club is the best area for walleye on the lake. I would stay on the west side where all the really steep drops are or even 1km north of the boat launch on east side where there is a gap between the reeds. 16-25 ft. Caught some really big ones in that location.

Beaver Mines lake 10-12" good ice
Beauvais lake 4" along north side. South side in the shade is probably better.

The good news is the temps are continuing to slide. By this time next week it is supposed to be a high of -25 in Central. And, a little bit of snow coming to help out the skidooers. Should be a different game in 2 weeks
