Patrik Laine You know Floater. Just hang out by the faceoff circle with your stick up in the air and wait. Glad to see no Oilers doing this.

Perspective, if you were building a team outside of the Floilers who would you take to create a base 6 players.....but that's the oilers problem...players go elsewhere and thier potential found but as a Floilers they are lost....go figure eh...and guess what as much as people argue check the stats....yup

Top ten in scoring where....on his team....maybe but in the league nope!
Top ten in a horrible team is not an accomplishment.....
Check the NHL stats ref goals, assist and overall points.....
Mcdavid is there and ohhhhh yeah the German too....where's the floater.....toilet bowl corn is what I say.

No. You said nuge is a floater as in that’s all he does. He’s not. He’s one of the best 2 way players in the league. Floaters don’t fit that bill. Nope. Watch a game.

Watch him bury his head to get back and how many times does he not tie up a check or worse yet line a guy up, swing his stick at the puck and curl away from a legal body check he could have delivered....all good if you were Johnny hockey cuz he puts up awesome points to justify his lack of engagement....oh well like I said proof is in the pudding...book tee off times boys....seasons a wrap!
Maybe next year or hey better yet....remember when.
Now don't you rub my Canucks in my face.....

Here is a list of the players ahead of Draisaitl in points
Kucherov
Kane
McDavid
Gaudreau
Rantanen
MacKinnon
Point
Wheeler
And Rantanen and Point are on the list because of playing with MacKinnon and Kucherov exclusive. Wonder where Draisaitl would be if he played the entire year and every game with McDavid.
Draisaitl was +7 in 2016/17 and is a +4 so far this year while his team is out of the playoffs.
Reality check, McDavid right now is a +3 and plays less time than Draisaitl on the PK.
If Draisaitl is such a floater and his contract is so horrible, who the hell is going to trade for him anyways. I guess the Oilers are stuck with the slug.
I not saying Draisaitl doesn't have a bad game or lacks effort sometimes, but it is no more than anyone else on the list.

Yup players listed ahead of the German but where is wonder boy on the NHL stat list? He has been there since the beginning of his career, move nuge while he is still on people's radar....but he like the early golf season which is bread into this team.

Flush, flush....yup a two flusher and dam floater is still hanging around.
Like I said if the floater was like johnnynthen keep him but he like lost on the team fall very short of what thier salary is and what a professional hockey player puts forth on the ice other than go through the motions, look at the clock and think about the post game steak supper.

FYI you don’t get a - when you’re scored on while on the PK.

The importance of both Nuge and Draisaitl on this team cannot be underscored enough. Floaters... Heck, I've seen McDavid float lots of times. Players don't go full throttle 100% of the time, that's just ridiculous.
I realized something just now. In roughly 1980, a friend of mine asked me what I thought of that Gretzky kid. I was not an Oilers fan at the time. I said he's not that good and he's a goal suck. (You did see him hanging out waiting for that stretch pass while his wingers dug the puck out of their own end). My friend's response was "Ah... you can only be jealous of Gretzky".
He was right of course. I also didn't know what I was talking about.

Yes I am aware of that, the reference for the PK time was that not many "Floaters" play the PK.
Just don't understand all the hate for Draisaitl; Oilers fans or Flames fans.

I'm thinking it's not so much how he plays as how much he's making...he's talented yes, but in many peoples opinion, not worth $8.5MM.....I'd love to have him on my Flames for around $6MM

Fair enough.... but remember it is a 8 year deal. If he keeps producing at the same levels then years 5, 6,7 and 8 are going to look really good on the books.

People can’t see past the current year. What do they think 90-100 pt 22 year olds will be signing for 5 or 6 years down the road? 8 years from now Leon types will be signing for Connor type contracts.

Hey, if you guys love him, that's great...I think you're right that contracts will keep going up but looking at value 8 years in the future means squat in today's cap market. Living in The Now, it's going to take some clever dealing to make the Oilers a balanced team...I see no way forward without offering up some big names/picks/prospects...would be a bit different without Milan Albatross..er..Lucic deal

I agree somewhat on the Lucic deal, but if he had continued his numbers at the time of signing and provided a much needed physical presence, then the contract is ok. Lucic's contract sucks because he has sucked for the last 2 years. I compare him to Tom Wilson getting 5.2 million contract this summer.... only difference is Wilson is not sucking right now.
The Oilers could have signed Draisaitl to 3-4 year term at 6 to 6.5 million like Gaudreau. But the major down side to that is you risk losing him to free agency earlier and if he stays and his numbers are good he will demand 10-10.5 for the next 4 years. So really over the 8 year span it is exactly the same money with less risk of losing him. Now the only risk to the Oilers is that Leon tanks, but they are betting against that.
If Gaudreau signs another 4 year deal which I believe will be next year, I bet it will be in the 9.5-10 million range and the Flames will end up spending the same money for Gaudreau over 8 years as the Oilers are spending on Draisaitl for 8 years.

Or the cap goes down following the 21-22 season, which it did last time the CBA expired.

Johnny is signed till 21-22 so I don't believe he can resign till after 1st July 2021 (think that's how it works anyways...).

I'd gladly pay Draisaitl $8.5M before I'd pay Matthews $11.6M! Youch.

So Mathews gets 11.6. Who do you think wins the Mariner lottery?

You don't think Toronto will resign him? I suspect they'll simply ship out Conner or Hyman which would put them up to around $9M in space.

They are saying that over 90% of the contract is in signing bonuses...how does that work?? I see on the Sportsnet ticker that $11.67 is still a cap hit...

Not sure if you're asking the right question.... How it works is easy, Mathews signs, gets a bonus, then the salary portion is paid out throughout the year as the season progresses.
The cap hit is still $11.67 as all money paid towards the player counts as salary cap so the rich teams aren't offering players a huge bonus and then $700k in salary and saying their cap hit is only $700k. The reason the players want the bonus, presumably, is they get the money sooner and the signing bonus isn't affect by a work stoppage, whereas the salary is.

Lucic could explain the details.
There are some advantages to the player.
1) If there is a lockout/strike, he gets to keep his signing bonus.......which in this case is pretty substantial.
2) Makes him buyout proof as his salary will be low but his cap hit will be high
3) Others can chime in.

I can see the cap going down and compliance buyouts to go with it.
IMO the league increases the cap when they don't have the revenues to justify it. The players hate escrow with a passion. I can see escrow being one of the major issues during CBA negotiations.
