Thanks Immigrant, I don't know yet how bad the bears will be but I've been told if there's any food in the cabin the bears will find a way in. I have not heard of a lot of bear problems at other cabins but mine is a little more remote so time will tell. I don't know that I will get enough sunlight in there to charge an electric fence. Another thing I came across is an electric mat but again I don't know that I would be able to keep a battery charged up enough. Do not know how much electricity is required but I imagine it is a fair amount. How do you keep your fence charged? Solar panels trickle charging a battery ?

I used a 80Ah battery with a 40w solar panel dedicated to the energizer. It probably only gets 2 hours full sun. I was there yesterday and it was still running (after 13 days) but I imagine I am using more power than I am putting back with the panel. When I go back i will charge it to 100% with the generator

Gene Walters, one of the best trappers we had in Northern Alberta had problems with grizz on many of his cabins. He would place angle iron on the corners so grizz would not rip the siding or wood panels off. One grizz dug under cabin and tried coming in through the floor. Goodluck with your neighbours.

They pulled them up and tossed them aside. I'm going to fence in any new ones we build with barbed wire about 6 feet tall and go full metal on the outsides. It's like they played with this one and tore everything up, not just was necessary to get into the cabin.
Yes that cabin will get used as a storage shed and boarded up completely. Hopefully the barb wire will keep them out.

Gene Walters is a legend, he past a few years back.
I read his book, pretty cool and lots of references to grizz getting into his cabins.
Our quarter boarders his old line and one cabin is aprx 5 miles out from our boundary.
No signs of grizz as yet that I've seen, nor on cam, and I hope they keep their distance.

I'd use it as a storage shed for firewood. A Grizzly could lean on it and get in. Sure did make a mess of it though.

The log cabin will be used as a storage shed. The outside structure is still fairly sound. Just a mess
The stick built one with all the missing walls will get burnt to the ground 😉

They sure don't like a tin outside. That should do the trick. That and metal framed steel doors and windows. Worked for me.

That's the plan. Full metal outsides and fenced with razor wire. Should keep all but the most determined out.

Get in touch with Corrections Canada and get a bulk deal on razor wire. Seriously you are certainly going to keep them out. That and putting out some expired canisters of bear spray with bacon grease on it outside the perimeter.

Not a trap line, but our Cabin that my dad and brothers started to build from 1996. Dad passed away in 06' but the memories continue on...we are adding a bunkhouse to it. It is 10x16 with the deck so 10x12 inside space. Just enough for a bed to crash in. Too damn cold to continue for now, so we will finish in the spring.

Well i bought this in a little hamlet. Not really a cabin out in the middle of now where but kind of the same as the hamlet is in good hunting area, in the middle of no where. The price was right. It comes with an out house and a generator.
Thinking on 12 volt lighting of some sort. I have a few solar panels. Any suggestions on lights?
Thinking on a shed next to it with a shower pump and water heater and water tank. Have a tank but looking at any suggestions for a shower, pump etc. I have a small camper sink lined up.
Thinking a used 12 volt camper pump and camper hot water heater. Ebay/amazon have the pumps for 100$. Not sure on the pumps rate that is needed.
Thinking Barker board shower and drain to the ground. Looking for a shower on kijiji facebook but non when one wants on.
