Great thread Smoky and congrats to your friends/family on their bucks so far, a well deserved great buck for your wife's first!
The best part of the month for seeing the big boys on the move is in front of you, I look forward to seeing what you get rewarded with for all the work you've put in this season.

I am just not too excited about getting out this morning, have a bunch of stuff too do, soo may get out later on about noon to check the deer movement in my hunting area.

Oh it was a force myself out the door kinda day but I know I won’t get my buck from the couch

But of course I go sit in the stand at the bottom of a ravine so it will suck if I shoot a buck lol

My antlered tag is already folded and the buck is in the freezer, so I m scouting for my son and possibly shoot a doe with my 9.3X72R drilling

Woke up today and it’s horrible conditions for hunting from a tree stand. There is no point sitting in a tree stand swaying in high winds

But we also have fresh soft snow and combined that with the high winds that help cover noise it’s great conditions for still hunting. So today I will be switching it up

You have to be versatile and hunt according to the conditions sometimes

Yup, got a few nice bucks over the years poking around in high winds in the bush or in prairie buck brush.
Once this lets up they will get up to feed as in the does and take any buck along for the walk too.
Shoot straight!

Default Thank you!

Smoky Buck, what an awesome post from start to finish. Thank you for sharing all of your experiences and hard work with all of us. The same as Obsessed 1 did with his elk knowledge last year. A lot of guys who have learned from doing would keep that info to themselves. Pretty sure the odd guy's chances will improve by doing some of the tactics that you have pointed out.
Best of luck in finding the big one!

At home done for the day and going to work on the wife’s deer

Today’s tip if you put your phone on vibrate in the same pocket as your extra shells your wife will call you when you are waiting for a nice buck to step out from behind a tree

Let’s just say 10 yards nice non typical kinda ****ed

Ouch, bad timing seems to always show up when you least expect it!
Maybe your wife didn't want you to get a bigger buck than hers....lol

Tomorrow is another day and should be good conditions. Really I need to take care of some stuff I have been neglecting too do as well

Not much for fresh tracks in the snow so odds are most are hunkered down today

Thank you for this excellent thread, very informative and exciting to read.

I appreciate the effort this must take and the shared knowledge on thinking differently about where opportunities exist in our public hunting areas.

For years I have thought about strategies for the denser bush in the areas I hunt and these comments have helped a lot with how to target thicker spots.

A generous and impressive thread, hats off to you Smoky and good luck.

Looks like quite a slaughter operation you set up there, man. Hahaha. Well done.

Lol. Gotta hurt. My phone is always in an empty pocket or tucked in my jacket, pants or some other place (no, not that one!) where even I can’t hear it, lol.

Another day tomorrow, Smoky, like you said. Best of luck!

Good to hear you guys are finding my ramblings useful and entertaining

For those trying to learn from this thread the biggest thing you should take from this thread is get out in the bush and invest your time learning your area/deer within it. I have said it already there is so much that is not in this thread that would be hard to explain in writing. There is nothing more valuable then going out in the bush paying attention to sign and seeing where it leads you.

The other one’s don’t get caught up on visibility and time of day. If your set up right you can get right up close and the deer are still around mid day

Fishnguy

I don’t call it a slaughter operation I call it building good karma. I can also promise you this if I want to visit any area my buddies hunt I am welcome without question. Most of those who came to visit me I have played a roll in getting them started hunting, learning new tactics or experiencing a new species.

Even if I eat my tag in the end I will have still enjoyed my season

Not sure if I wrote it wrong (or reading you wrong?). I meant well done. A few deer taken, everyone who wanted one took a deer and it seems a deer they wanted. And even left the bigger boys for you to get next season. So, really, you did a hell of job.

Sometimes my “jokes” are probably not as funny as I think they are

All good and I took it as you meant and no offense of any kind was taken

I was merely rambling.

I am definitely left with tree stand options for the 7 hunting days I have left and plenty of nice bucks left to dream of

Yup she is a little bit colder and it’s tougher to climb into a tree stand with extra layers

SmokyBuck I’ve been following this thread all along silently and now I’m attempting the same thing. Found a nice spot where the growth goes from tamarack swamp to poplar along a ridge. The deer seem to filter in through here. There’s a fresh scrape line to my right too.
I also haven’t seen a thing all day lol. It’s hard to stay focused sitting all day. Oh well, day 1 of 5 straight!

I love the thread, very informative and entertaining!

Hunted crown land bush, deer were very active where I was today especially from 1:30 to about 3:30 in the afternoon, saw more bucks than does.

Heh! Sorry to hear that.

Not a lot of animals on the highway tonight either. Kinda glad about that.

Hope they show up tomorrow!
