Bump for the 2012 crowd. Global warming may push the morel season into April this year... lots of strange weather all over the place... Artic air being pushed through canada and greenland causing abnormal temperatures everywhere.

Found my first Alberta morels last spring (thanks WB!!!). In BC I had only ever found 2 that were NOT in a burned area. WB gave me some advice and on my first morel hunt last spring I found 5 growing in the grass..... CRAZY!

Hey I just found this thread...that's good to hear there are morels up here. I would hunt for them all the time in Kansas but didn't know if they grew much up here. How do guys do in the Calgary area? Whats a average number some of you guys will find in a season?

All depends on how wet the spring will be. Last year was very wet and there were a lot of them but it was my first year picking them as well so I have no reference.
There are a lot of photos from last year so have a look at the dates they were posted for an estimate.

Trees are budding, temperature is mid teens during the day, and low digits during evening.... another week before morels starting popping??? Looks promising.

They will be out soon, if winter doesn't return.
Going back through this thread gives a good indication of when morels start in different areas.
As a temperature condition, Morels usually start growing when the ground temp. is over 10 Celcius and the air temp. is consistently over 16 degrees during the day with nighttime temp not going lower than 5 degrees.
Lots of great picking opportunities for Black morels this year. Go to one of last years burns.

Does anyone know if black Morels usually have an earlier season than Blonde?

Sorry I missed this question.
We partially fry them, then freeze them.
Cooking, even partial cooking stops the decomposition process. IE the spoiling you talk about.
Shaggys start to decompose the moment you pick them. They can decompose in as little as four hours. Rough handling accelerates the decomposition process.
So,
Handle them gently, don't bother collecting specimens with any darkening along the bottom rim of the cap. Don't stack them on top of each other, I use egg trays. I place each mushroom, cap down in it's own egg cup.
Keep them as cool as possible and try to get them cooked in less then four hours.
You only need to cook them until they start to change colour. Then spread them on a cookie sheet and put them in the freezer to flash freeze them.
Once frozen, bag them and return them to the freezer until you want to use them.
One last thing. Decomposition, turning black does not make them poisonous or anything, but they do get incredibly bitter tasting.

The black morel is usually the first true morel to appear in the spring. But in central Alberta I pick both in the same season. last 3 weeks of May usually.
NOTE: Morels are important springtime fresh mineral food for deer so always leave a few if there is deer activity in the area.

Had a bit of a look this weekend at our last year's haunt near Calgary and it's very barren right now. Need a good dump of rain in the next few weeks to get them going I think.

Was just told yesterday that the Morels are abundant in the Golden region. I don't pick them but if anyone is heading out Golden way, I'll get you some patches to foray about, PM me,,, great people out that way but they aren't on the forums, they are also fishin people and would gladly point anyone in the right direction looking at exploring that region.

Does anybody have any killer Morel recipes, aside from just frying them?
I'm ordering some fresh ones from B.C. and I'd like to give my wife a good first impression. (I've never tried them before either)
Thanks.

Has anyone ever heard of training a morel pig to sniff out these wonderful mushrooms?
And if the pig fails, all is not lost.

The season hasn't started around Edmonton as far as I can find. Was out to my 'spots' today and do believe it is about a week or so away. Usually the last three or two weeks of May.

A pig would work and so would a good dog. A real good dog would pick them and bring them back too. And any antler it might find too.

$15-25/lb in the stores, if you can even find them. Dried ones go for $350/lb
