Law enforcement and U.S. government sources tell CBS News the dead shooting suspect is Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, born 1982, and he is believed to be Canadian-born. confirmed now

I agree Benamen
I just had a co-worker walk in and say, "If they are willing to blow themselves up to take out a few people......what if they intentionally contract a disease like ebola? What if 500 of these people show up?"
I'm typically not a tin foil hat kind of guy......but that is a scary thought.

I wonder which is the more worrisome there sport?.....a one time 'protest' or regular preachings of violent hatred in a closed environment to the like minded under the convenient cover of religion....need a hint?

Well, one upside in all this sad sad news... Members of Parliament will now have had a personal, intense experience with terrorism. It will be "real" to them. Wonder if any attitudes or pronouncements will change.
Did anyone hear if Justin went out to talk to the gunman about what injustices he was feeling?

I can't conceive of any "changes" that would be beneficial.
What changes would you like to see?

Good thing you are not running the country then. I'd hate to hear Harper declare "We can't think of a single thing we could do differently. I guess this stuff is just going to happen."
Ans no, you can't bait me into saying "Send 'em all back to where they came from." If you have ever read anything I've written you know that's not my take.

Canada wide order. Doesn't affect me, I go to the gym in PT gear every morning before I go to work and go home in civvies.
This is now a force protection issue.

No such order here. On the contrary, dir was given to take pride in wearing the uniform, without undue exposure. Everything is good in the Wild West. Sit could take a turn overnight though.

What you suggested and would also be nice if the other party leaders supported Harpers decision to "get involved" instead of criticizing him and saying that all we should be doing is sending aid. Those type of comments are what cowards make, not leaders of a country.

No, you wouldn't hear that - events present great opportunities for authoritarians at all levels to justify increasing their powers.
You've been clear that you condemn inaction - What government response would you like to see?

Does anyone know how old Cpl. Cirrillo's son is?
Cirrillo looks like a young fellow.
Also, the liberals are already cow towing and saying things have to change with a dirty smug grin on the CBC. I wonder "what things".
For heavens sake, let us get politics out of this issue until this situation is under control.

I wouldn't mind seeing a screening station put in at the entrance of the parliament building to begin with. Something similar to what they have at the courthouses would have slowed down the shooter.

I don't have any immediate thoughts on the matter.
But really, I'd suggest that your question is better directed towards those trumpeting the need to do *something*.

How about increased use of already existing hate speech laws to go after those that radicalize and incite? How about legislation that addresses Canadians leaving the country to fight in terrorist or non-governmental forces and beng able to freely return? Perhaps we need to beef up and hone our domestic intelligence capability. I'm not in a position to determine exactly what needs to be done, but it's a relatively new situation and recent events have proven the status quo inadequate.
Either one feels that something needs to be done differently than before, or that nothing needs to be done. I take it you are in the latter camp?

Remember, terrorism knows no nationality. This story is reminiscent of the American Taliban, another homegrown terrorist, he is eligible for parole in a few short years.
Bibeau won't be missed, Cirillo will be by Canada and his family.. RIP

My personal opinion is that we should be giving absolutely no recognition to these scum. No name no nationality. Take the corpse to a hog farm and let the pigs dispose of them, then erase every single trace of their existance on this earth. My condolences to the family and comrades of the fallen hero.

Converts to any cause, be it religious, social, or as minor a thing as being a former alcoholic, are generally the most committed and vociferous. Having been persuaded to believe something once, they are more likely to be persuaded further. I suspect that's why so many of these guys are converts, vs people born into the religion.

You don't get it... What qualifies as "Hate speech" is you, who is a part of a majority, saying that a minority is becoming radical and out of control.
Hate speech is not valid with minorities, after all they just express their frustration and differences in a louder way and need support!
Of course, I'm sarcastic, but you get the idea.
