Was at RR23 access on Friday, Feb. 16. Not many others out that day. We walked out but everyone else drove out. Some people made it fine, even saw one guy in what looked like an SUV get very far out from shore and make it off fine. Saw several people get stuck even when following "paths", some got themselves free within a few minutes, longest stuck vehicle took over half an hour to free. Almost everyone driving on the ice was in trucks (except that guy in an SUV who made it to really deep water). Snow was soft and drifted. You could go from 10 cm of snow to suddenly hitting a drift of 30 or 45 cm, without warning. Within 20 or 30 metres of the access point was very packed down, after that it quickly became lonesome trails. Fishing was probably the worst I've ever experienced... we only saw one fish (a whitefish) in 6 hours of fishing, fished from 4 feet to 23 feet of water, targeted anything and everything -- whitefish, pike, burbot, walleye, perch -- going through smelts, small minnows, maggots, Gulp bait, and plastics, and every lure combo we could dream up. Oh well.
