Default Lakeland Fishing Update for October 4th!

With the mild fall season so far, anglers are enjoying good fishing along with the fantastic weather. Cold Lake, although closed for lake trout, still has exceptional angling for pike and walleye with the rocky points around the Provincal Park area producing best. This is the time of year when bigger is better so use large crankbaits in perch or silver and black patterns. Casting works better in the mornings and evenings with trolling being the hot ticket throughout the day. 12-20 ft of water is best but watch your fish finder as fish move into as little as 4-6 ft of water.
Marie Lake is producing some huge pike this year. Target the few remaining weedbeds on the lake, fan casting with large swim baits. Once again perch and silver/black patterns are producing best.
For the rainbow anglers out there, Little Bear Lake off of the Primrose highway has overwintered and has fish from pan fry to 4+ lbs. Fly anglers are doing well with back swimmer patterns along with wooly buggers in black while spin fishermen are using small crankbaits in brown trout patterns along with gang trolls and dew worms. This lake is a great place to take the kids or newbies to try fishing as the fishing is fast and furious.
The hidden hotspot this time of year is Ethel Lake as the yellow perch fishery has become excellent for jumbos of 1-2 lbs. In this beautiful body of water, the north shore is the spot late in the season with small tube jigs and dew worms being the hot bait. This lake also has large pike and walleye but remember the walleye are a zero limit so catch and release with care.
For the walleye angler, the fall is the time to try Moose Lake by Bonnyville. Shad raps and vertical jigging are producing best with evening being the best time of day. 1/4 oz jig and minnows combos are your best bet. Enjoy your time in the Lakeland and remember limit your catch and you do not always have to catch your limit.
