Default NSR Surprise

Went for a quickie at the river this after noon, caught a goldeye on a husky jerk, a short nose redhorse on a p-rig and a clam on a p-rig as well This is the second time I have caught one on a p-rig. Anyone else catch these?

Cool. Looks like Anodonta grandis.

Those freshwater mussels lure fish into biting a fake worm which sticks out of their shell. They then shoot a bunch of their larvae at the fish which stick onto its gills and other soft tissues. The larvae encyst, and eventually pop out as tiny clams which fall to the bottom.

Weird

my buddy did that once. i often see lots of piles of shells and wanted to try some over an open fire but have been told about the mercury content is extremely high. some seem to enjoy them for shore lunch.

Who doesn't like surprises?

I took this pic on the Red Deer River a few years ago; my buddy caught a walleye on his pickerel rig & a clam on the bell sinker at the same time.

That evening I started throwing a topwater Jitterbug, hoping to catch a pike; no pike, but I got a goldeye & two sauger on the Jitterbug. Was not expecting that!
