Default 50+ NSR Sturgeon

Just thought i'd share this one. Caught earlier this evening on a 1/4 ounce Walleye jig & minnow - 45 minute fight on 6lb line and my first one ever.

My scale bottomed out at 50lbs and I didn't measure (as my tape was still in my bag, 100m away thanks to the fish) and i didn't want her out of the water that long.

Interesting to say the least, and glad to say, carefully released and unharmed.

Great job landing the fish. I reckon there are guys who accidently hookup on a sturgeon and never get to see it before it breaks off.

Fish & Wildlife is very interested in the distribution of sturgeon in the NSR (and other rivers I guess). You should send a GPS or specific location description, along with that pic, to a fisheries person in Edmonton.

Great Sturgeon ! it looks to be close to the same length (151 cm) and thickness as one I brought in to be smoked many years ago and it weighed 65 lbs dressed

Thanks for the replies, but as for you avid Sturgeon hunters out there, don't go changing your tactics. This had to be one in a million, first cast, first "jig" and she was accidentally caught near the tail (but it took about 7 - 50m runs and the full 45min to find that out!)

As for the tag, there didn't seem to be much of one there. I quickly checked it, but it was simply a small peice of rusted/ corroded metal with no visible numbers (unless they were covered in corrosion - and i wasn't about to **** around with her)

Hey Bleach,

My neighbour was just over threatening to scratch my boat if i divulge the spot to anyone! He showed me the spot the other night (as i usually hit the lakes) and he was at my door "snarling" as soon as he was finished work today.

Hilarious, but DRIZZLE64 will be happy to know that "mum" is the word!

Again, complete fluke and it had to of been 90% luck, 9% line and 1% skill that brought her in.

I will talk to you later

I have had some really good luck and bad luck with the NSR. It seems when you find a spot with fish, there are lots and it's amazing but if you do a little bit down the river there could be nothing. I have been fishing Devil's lake with good success the last couple of weekends but I think I am going to try Jackfish lake tomorrow. Any lakes you can recommend with an hour or two drive that produce some larger pike?

Jackfish is a great bet for big Walleye, but as you know, only for pics. Have caught several over 6lbs, a buddy caught an 8 and another caught a possible 10 (no scale) Two tips for them;

1. Slip bobber w/ leech in about 4 - 10ft, just off the weed edges, and
2. See #1.

Be patient, when they start, they will keep you busy.

As for big pike within 1.5hrs, i would have to go with Baptiste. The sandbar is pretty reliable. If you can't catch a 10 - 15lb there throwing Suicks, Cisco kids or any large bait at this time of year, sell your gear. Wabamun would also be worth a shot.......i used to do the Wab in the morning and Jackfish from about 3 until sunset.

Good luck

Hey guys, this is what a "floy" or spagetti tag looks like. It is how F&W normally marks fish. There is a number on the tag. Sometimes algae grows on the plastic tag and covers the number. The brownish coating of algae can be scratched off with your finger nail (not a knife) so you can read the number.

If you can provide F&W with the color and number of the tag, the species of fish and a good location of where you caught it, that information can be very valuable.

The sturgeon may have been tagged many years and many miles away and the tag color and number would have told the story.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately a little late in this case, but super important nonetheless as I really wish I knew what I was seeing, or looking for, at the time. This was the first one I had ever seen and after rubbing the metal, I just assumed the "data portion" had broken or corroded off, and was in a little hurry to get the big girl back into the water and swimming away on her own.

Maybe a quick post reference tags, and your photo would go a long way to informing guys about tagged fish.

Thanks again, and

Cheers

Out of curiosity Shawn what is the NSR record?

Without a fork length and girth measurement it's impossible to tell what it weighs but I would say over 50 but under 60lbs.

That was probably the last thing you expected when you casted out. Good for you and it gives others hope that you just never know....

Why did we dig up a post that was 2 1/2 years old?

Interesting coloration on it though...it looks way darker than any of the ones I've caught this year.
