Default $37,000 for shooting a moose out of season

I don't think he'll be doing that again

Be nice if somebody gets that truck for a good deal at auction. Hope they seized his rifle too.

The fine itself was fairly small IMO (only $8000) for something like a moose. The fact that his truck was forfeited probably made it sting a bit more.

Hmm, is moose replacing black bear as the aphrodisiac of choice? The replies after the article are entertaining to say the least.

For those poaching while already driving stolen trucks it's a less painful punishment.

You will likely see this more often with the way the economy is going. People out of jobs will be desperate to feed their families.

X2. I also liked the other articles on that link, esp. the wolf and grizzley bear proposed harvest numbers.

I don't think that the perpetrator was struggling to feed his family. He could have sold that Raptor truck of his and picked up a 90's GMC half ton for $1500. That would leave a lot of money for red meat...

Not ones driving Ford Raptors though, if you're managing to keep it fueled you're not truly desperate, despite gas being lower for the time being.

If the total adds up to $37,000 between the truck and the fine then someone needs to brush up on their math.

$8,000 fine + 2013 Raptor doesn't = $37,000.

Unless the Raptor was in really really bad shape.

Either way, it is a great start and I'd like to shake the hand of that judge.

running over a kid in a crosswalk probably nets far less punishment. when you look at wildlife cases from a relative context, they don't add up for me.

I think he should have faced much worse fines.

The convicted poacher and his friends and associates were in " the meat business" there was more than just one or two moose/ ungulates of unknown numbers poached by these scum ,

I doubt if this will stop thier wild meat cartell , now they will just make up for the LOST investment ,,

Due to the lack of enforcement capability they have to hammer the ones they actually catch hard to set an example. All about deterrence in these sentences.

Another active poaching case in BC , now the convicted/self confessed poacher/wildlife destroyer is awaiting sentencing , while the judge takes the offenders upbringing and social standing into consideration,,,,

Oh, and this charge is from thrill killing and abandoning 8 Rosevelt Elk,,,,

Bizarre. Is this "meat business" associated with a particular segment of the demographics?

The difference is intent. Anyone hitting a kid in a cross walk did it by mistake.
The guy poaching a moose out of season did it on purpose.
That's a BIG difference

x2 Until the penalties become a real deterrent, poaching will continue.

Kudos to both the judge and the hunters who reported it.

I actually know of a guy charged with shooting a Cow moose out of season near 100 Mile House BC during the 1970s , who gave his defence as being he was target shooting at some trees and didn't realize there was a moose amongst the trees, he was given a suspended sentence and later days after the trial, the Arresting CO sighted in the moose shooters 94 Win 30-30 , and told the shooter be " more careful from now on "

And so help me that is the way it happened, the guy was my cousins husband, I was in court and heard with my own ears,,,

I damm near pi$$ed my self from laughing in court, it was so gol damm funny,,,

Bringing a little Mens Rea to the Actus reus I see...well my comment was only rhetorical in nature anyhow...

Shooting a moose out of season isn't that big of a deal when violent crimes like domestic disputes and home invasions go nearly unpunished...

nope. these guys were probably after a bear and just killed the first thing they saw. Grew up in Vancouver. when mom's friends (yes,Chinese)found out I was a hunter they used to pester me to get them a bear . Idiots think bear paw and gal bladders were magic . I will bet those old beliefs are still there .

My point exactly, it's cheaper for a tank of fuel than a side of beef. You do know meet doesn't grow on trees.
