Grand River CATS
The bite has slowed down quite abit, but the BIG cats are still there just have to work alittle harder for them.
I managed to get out around 4 times this year so far landing around 25 cats in the 3-15 lb range.
Had my 10&6 year old girls with me for one of those outings with each of them landing there PB cat, 9 & 13 lbs but had NO camera with me.
Out of all the cats landed this year I only managed 1 pic of around a 10 lb fish.
Been using the flipping rod with 50 lb braid, #1 circle hook, 3-6 oz egg weights and throwing cut bait at them.
Hoping to get out acouple more times atleast before the big run is done.

Good to see things are still growing there. Do they still have the power boat regatta at the bot club? People still walking the apron fishing the dam?

I remember the Grand being advertised as a toxic waste stream years ago.
The CBC even had a documentary about the river.
I guess a little cleaning up can really change things around.

Try night fishing with lighted slip bobbers and big prawn shrimp! The big girls come out to feed 2-4 feet under the water. Give it a shot!

Not a lot has changed. I lived nearby the grand for a few years.
With that many cities upstream, by the time the water hits the lake it is mostly grey if you know what I mean.

Then you know nothing about the way the river was compared to what it is now.

Ya when I was growing up you did not have to be a saint to walk on the water...lol
The fishing when i was a kid consisted of carp, cats, suckers and one I forgot to mention before Sheepshead. You were lucky to see a bass or walleye at the odd weir never seen a trout till I was in my late teens. With the work of many organizations, private people and the start up of " Friends of the Grand River" in the late 90s the water way has improved greatly and fishing has returned to what it was when my Grandfather was a boy.

The late 90s quote was just when "friends of the grand river" was formed.
Your right the quality of fish was improved long before then. I have fished the grand since the very late 50s so I can remember when the river was a toxic sludge hole. But will stand up for the was it has changed over the years. It is and has been a great fishery for quite a few years.
