Default Going Fishing.... I hope!

I grew up fishing and hunting and now that my kids are getting old enough to join me, I want to get back into it.

I made a trip into Bass Pro Shops today and bought a new rod and reel. A quick note, the guys at the fishing counter were amazing. I described my skill and my goals for fishing. Gave them my budget and off we went. The guy there showed me a couple of different style reels and when I decided on a bait caster he gave me a quick lesson on how to use the reel right and how to get the most out of it. He hooked my up with a nice Abu Garcia reel that just happened to be on sale! Then he threw in a free box of line and even loaded it for me. Saved over $70 there today.

I digress. My main question is this. I live in Trochu, AB in kneehill county. I want to take the kiddos fishing. It has to be shore or dock fishing for now as we don't yet have a boat. Where can I go that we might actually catch fish??? The closer the better but driving an hour or so isn't out of the question for a fun day.

Thanks for your help!

Lots of fishing on the Red Deer river by the Tolman bridge. Just check the regulations for each section of the Red Deer river. For now only the upper portion of the RDR down to Glennifer lake (reservoir) is open. Different opening days for different section too.

Lots of different fish species there for your enjoyment.

Good luck.

I agree with ogre. There's good walleye fishing on the Red Deer river near Trochu. I like to fish downstream from Tolman Bridge where bait is allowed.
