Edmonton gets all the luck and cold weather.
Lake Sundance was almost frozen over yesterday...but this morning...completely open. With the weather warming...I am not expecting ice for a while longer.

We're getting extra lucky since we don't have any snow yet to insulate the ice. The longer it stays this way the better! I'm really hoping we don't have to deal with all the flood ice BS that we did last winter.

I'd heard last Sunday that there was 4" on said lake, though we didn't do that much exploring around...just stuck near the parking lot end where it was no more than 3". Still plenty solid though, and there was one guy out who did a circuit of the whole lake, so I'm assuming she'll be safe the whole way, even if it's not up to 4" yet.

We had great ice starting the season last year then piles and piles of snow...weighted it all down...cracked and flooded the surface. One spot near shore was so heavy there was over 1 foot of water on top of the ice within hours and a large hole where the water came up.

Man... those pics scare me. Not having any icefishing experience I find myself nervous about going out on ice until pretty deep in the season. A few inches? Not for me....

I like my chances of survival of breaking through.... in 3 or less feet of water.
Thats as far as we went.

I agree...anything less than 4 inches...not worth it. You can have variance in ice thickness of 4-6 inches in some areas...often the shore ice is a little thicker in the early winter and thinner in the Spring.
Not safe and not recommended.

Ive been fishing on ice now for almost 40 years, and alot of it down on teh east coast where 12 inches of ice is the most you will ever see. Not saying it can't happen to me because it has.....any way here is the scoup on 2-3 inches of ice, specifically the ice Geezle shows in his pics...its clear. you can see any imperfections, cracks, bubbles, what ever. So I would have no issues picking my way along watching as I go...2-4 inches with snow on it.....thats more iffy...add in shallow water, air temp not -20...sorry no dare devil. Minimal risk for some nice trout! Guess Ill be playing hookie from work to check it out myself.."Cough, cough....

Went and checked out lake X, last night, just to test some ice, ended up with one brooke, and seen a guy catch a bow that was about 15", by the look of it, im thinking it was last years stock, due to the size, but thought lake X, would have been one of the first to winterkill last winter. Going to give it a go again today.
