Default My 6 year olds 410 Shorten and restock, Finished.

I am currently modifying a 410 for my 6 year old son to shoot. Looking to get this barrel shortened, to make it a little more usable for his size. He and I have almost completed his new shortened stock and he is so excited. I understand that we will be making the current full choke into cylinder bore. He wants so badly to shoot clays. Any other thought or Ideas are welcome.

I had a buddy blow a choke out of a 12 gauge barrel, so I shortened it for him. Reinstalled the brass bead, etc.

I made a post about it a little while back:

I'd be happy to do the same for your little guy, if that's the route you decide to take.

A great gesture to help out a new shooter.

To the OP, Have him shoot stationary clays, then try hanging some clays on strings and letting them swing and spin. Seeing the clays break will keep him interested, and if you throw clays and he can't break any, he may become frustrated and lose interest.

That was my plan. He has been very proficient with his 22 as of now, I feel he is ready for this next step.

Thanks to the offers, PM's have been sent. Wayne I will call you this afternoon.

So a lot of time, a little help and a lot of learning later and I have completed My Boys 410 shotgun project. Huge thanks to Scott, "Scotty454" for doing an amazing job on the barrel cut down and re-bead.

Good decision. A gun to big to handle is a problem most people overlook when it comes to the kids.

Awesome projects like this are one of the best thing about the site. Looks great and should be very practical as well.

Looks good.

I started my son about 7 or 8 years old, standing on the trap house shooting clays with a 410. He took to it like a pro.

Nice work! I bought two of these for my kids

It fits them well. Muzzle blast is pretty good on them.

Update,
It's been 4 years since this post, and my boys have grown as expected. This little gun has been packed all over Alberta's half acre. It has shot pop cans, clays and more than enough grouse. It is time to move it on to the next youth hunter. My boys have grown, gained experience and now have the confidence to shoot things on the wing. We now require a gun with a choke so that they can be effective beyond 10-15 yards. Is there one of you out there with a unmodified 410 much like this one willing to trade for this youth version? I would be wiling to add cash for a nicer model if that is what you are wanting to part with. My boys can't wait to try to shoot Pheasants, Thanks and happy hunting.

Default cutting the barrel

Kinda makes it useless for hunting other than point blank, perhaps you can find a poly - choke to silver solder on the barrel.I know Numrich had some. When mine were little I picked up a 20ga Co-oey 37A 20" youth choked IM and switched to an adult stock when he filled out.Now 30 years old he's still shooting pheasants + grouse with it.
