Guess that's what you get when you Disneyfy wildlife.

And there are still people, including on this board, who want to introduce non-indigenous species into Alberta. Perhaps this article helps them understand the dangers.

Saw the news cast this morning...Most of us on the forum know that not all of these carp were discarded pets but stocked in private ponds…

channel cats are a far cry from a snakehead..lol. But still a top predator....they do very well with pike, walleye, whitebass, saugers, sturgeon....list goes on.

I said it in the Spring when the original thread was posted and I will say it again. We should organize a big carp catch day and go out and catch them. It is actually pretty fun to catch them because the action is non stop and I think that each and every one pulled out of the ecosystem will help.

They are fun to catch, put up a good fight. No fancy gear required.... great fishing for kids too.

We should round up the " itz mah rite to done keeps all duh fishes I dun gone out un caugt" cround and let them loose and these carp. Within a week there would be no more carp.

I'd say better education on the species is needed before people get all crazy about this.

I said it before and i'll say it again(in the words of my fishing pal who obviously cannot keep his word), you will never be able to control this species, you could but that would take drastic measures which would come at a cost of all other species within the area.

Plenty of info on interweb about this little carp, and all the lost battles in past 60 years, they invaded entire europe within 20 years.

And btw these fish have been in alberta for 2 decades, if not longer. Also worth noting is that they are not herbivore like many like to think.

Rabbits have nothing on these fishes when it comes to survival and reproduction.

Easily...there are a couple of large ponds/small lakes near Calgary that have thousands of them.

I like the article quote from Paul Christensen:

“These goldfish or Prussian Carp are coming from an unknown source that we have no control over,” “They could be carrying parasites from all over the world that have unknown effects on our native fish.”

If Paul did even a little research, he would know that 99.9999% of these come from fish farms in the Southeast USA....it is just not financially worthwhile to import common goldfish from outside of North America.
