You should have nicely mentioned your concern to him?

its much like a lake whitefish....

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fis...whitefish.html

but is not considered a legal "bait fish" in fishing terms.

Thanks kirbstomps! Appreciate your time, thats a good website.
I guess I shoulda 'Googled' it.
Interesting how the snout/jaw makes the i.d. When I read the part about them being called 'lake herring' that rang a bell. My old man used to call them that.

Thx again.

I really don't think the ice conditions would be affected much by a couple of warm days. If anything it should make driving on the lake easier. The roads getting there might be a different story if it is raining/freezing like it is right now in Edm. Whole city is a skating rink.

The warm weather shouldn't affect things at all. Might make things a bit sloppy getting on and off the ice but shouldn't affect the ice whatsoever

I have talked to a few guys who have been out in the past week and sounds like things are slow. Two people I talked to never caught a thing. Hopefully it picks up for the weekend.

French bay is just below the ski hill on the south side of the lake .Its a very large bay,as you can see on goggle maps the Sask. boarder goes threw it.
Just drive off the prov boat launch and you will see 40 trucks out there this weekend.

ColdL isn't dead, and the ice isn't bad, just be careful anywhere on the north/north east bays , we came out yesterday morning and had three lakers (one keeper for lunch) and some burbs on the ice by noon.

today has been alright as well, three more one the ice and another keeper for lunch too and bites are sporadic but keep coming. going to fish all day and tomorrow as well.

haven't touch water deeper then 75 feet

1 week of warm weather is not going to impact mid Jan-Feb ice in central/northern Alberta. It takes a better part of a month of well above freezing temperatures before one needs to start being concerned.

What people should be concerned about regarding Cold Lake ice is it floats on one big arse deep lake susceptible to currents, big time wind, and big time snow accumulations. Take caution out there.

It was a bit freaky driving out in the dark this morning on that wet black ice from the park. Rough day with only 4 on the ice , 3 lost and 3 broken rods ! Back to the drawing board !

Fish are around. Seeing lots and they are following, just not getting many hits. Ice is still here. Been crazy windy and a little rain this afternoon. Feels like last week of March on the lake with all the water and slush.

No they weren't big , just a bit overkill on the hook set , but 3 , really ! First one had to pick graphite fragments out of my cheek. Fish were there but couldn't even force feed them. Maybe should have moved shallower for more active fish

Man that's a real beauty! I was out this weekend an ended up with a couple pushing 12 pounds but nothing like that, must have been quite the fight! Were you fishing deep or shallow water?
